So after a rollercoaster 6 months of pain and Drs. giving me the "everyone's different" answer I have agreed to have a microdisectomy which is scheduled for Tuesday morning. I am just wondering if this is the end or possibly the beginning of many trips to the Drs. office for different treatments, I am hoping that I am not
opening Pandora's box to a slow slide of total disability. Of course I am nervous but after PT and Injections having no relief I am
open to just about
any kind of treatment to at least subdue the pain.

Lee we have had a couple of people recently here at the forum that has had this done. I urge you to use the search feature here at the forum & type in microdisectomy & read their stories. One of the guys I believe has kept like a diary from the time of surgery to just recently. It would be well worth your time to read their stories.
In all honesty, this may or may not fix the problem. For your sake I do hope this works but there is no guarantee. Even though its a micro type of surgery one thing i will say is do not let your surgeon push you into returning to work too soon. We are seeing a lot of folks having full blown fusions getting pushed out the door way too soon to go back to work. People heal differently & need ample time to allow their bodies to heal. Just because things look good on the outside does not mean things are healed on the inside.
A good website you may want to visit that is devoted to the spine is SpineUniverse.com. It is a great website to learn things from.
What type of dr will be doing your surgery? I sure hope it is a good neurosurgeon. Take care.

From the research I have done he is a good neurosurgeon, I cant say I am happy with the rest of his staff. I am sure once I have the surgery I will find another neurosurgeon as his PA and I do not get along, not sure what his problem is but he just rubs me the wrong way. I guess I am just worried about
a long term spiral and was looking for opinions from people who have gone this route in the past. Unfortunately most people who have has success with this will not be on here.

This surgery is not for someone that does heavy work. Also, depends on how bad the disc is too. If you have a pinched nerve there is a good chance of not getting immediate relief because they do not do surgery on the nerve they release the pressure off of the nerve & it has to heal on it's own. I cannot remember what your situation is so I am just guessing.
I would look at the posts I was telling you about
, they seem to be doing better if I remember right.

I have a herniated disc, nerve pinch, stenosis and all that. I have read the posts and hope that I have similar results as it does seem he is having good success.

I hoped that you could pick up some tips if you found the posts I was referring. The main thing is to follow through with the post op instructions & not rush things because you feel good. That is where a lot of people get in trouble doing things too soon.
When is your surgery scheduled?

My SIL, who also happens to work for a Pain Clinic, had a microdiscectomy performed about
2 years ago. She also went the whole route beforehand of injections....She said that for the first 8 months, she second guessed her decision and the choice to have this surgery.
But what my impression is, is what Susie brought up,....that she was encouraged to return to work very, very quickly.
In the big picture, 2 years later, she's happy she had it done. And in her case, it may have
prevented
a spiral from getting out of control. She firmly believes she nipped this in the bud.
One of the most common comments we see here come from people who are urged, even encouraged, to return to work much too soon.
While the docs are quick to remind us "everyone is different," they tend to put a lot of us on the same type of "schedule" when it comes to time to return to work, not considering our individual healing rate.
Did you get a second opinion regarding your surgery? Just curious.....

I haven't had this particular surgical procedure done, but completely agree with folks here regarding return to work.
Listen to your body. Don't force yourself to go back to work too soon if it doesn't feel right, even if others say you are fine. I learned the hard way after major abdominal surgery. I do know of others who have done fine with this procedure and were able to go back to work. Best wishes for you.

Well just talked with the pre-op nurse and she dropped the bomb on me that they also have me schedule for laminectomy, I have read several sites but can anyone tell me what the hell it is? Will it make my bone structure weaker as they are burring out bone?

Lee, among other things I have laminectomies L1-L5. Yes, bone is taken away. And yes it does impede some of the boney integrity.
I'm working hard (well, let's say I had to take a hiatus but I'm back to doing my best to work hard) to do proper strength training to help compensate and build the supporting muscles along my spine. Doesn't take the place but it helps.

I think before doing anything surgery wise, I would find myself the best neurosurgeon on my plan & get a second opinion. I forgot to mention this in my original post to you. Never, never have surgery of any kind without getting a second opinion. I would also never have spine surgery unless a neurosurgeon did it simply because they are trained more than an orthopedic when it comes to dealing with nerve problems, after all those guys do brain surgery & how delicate of a surgery do you think that is. Orthopedics deal more with the boney structure as their specialty. Just my 2 cents. How did you go from a microsurgery to a lammie? Again, use the search feature here at the forum & you will find folks that has had this surgery too.

Ok so I've had a microdiscectomy with laminectomy. They have to remove the lamina to get to the disc. That is why u are having both. The lamina is a little piece of the bone off your vertebrae. My first 2 times of having this done went perfect! I came out in less pain than I went in with. Until the next day and for about
a month it was horrible but got better. However the third time was different. I've lived with chronic back pain since and just had a stimulator put in. Which if the infection would go away would be great. I would be happy to answer questions if u have them. Even after recovery .
