Methadone-Think Twice

Methadone is prescribed for long term pain use. It was invented by the ****'s during WWII to help troups fight through pain.
It has worked fairly well for me, but it was found to cause one to be lethargic, which it does.
The main problem is that it gets in the fat in your body and has a very long and painful detox time, I've been told months. For this reason I am changing meds. Just think if something happened where you could no longer get medication such as the grid going down. With Oxy or Morphine based meds, you're going to suffer for a while, but then it will be over, with Methadone, the detox will be long and very bad.

It is prescribed because the it's cheap for the insurance company's. It does work, but to me, it's not worth risking being on it if something happens that limits the ability to get more.
It's also used by Heroin users to detox from Heroin, but they usually have to stay on at least a maintenance dose their entire lives. I've read thread after thread from people who said they are sorry they ever started taking Methadone, so think twice before letting your doctor prescribe it, there are other meds that work as well. Just my 2 cents

Several yrs back, in Washington state, they put pressure on drs who treated medicald receipents, w/c and those that worked for the state to use Methadone for chronic pain due to the lower costs. The result was a lot of deaths.

10 yrs ago, my dr wanted to put me on Methadone for chronic severe pain and I told him, no due to it's reputation. He choose another med. For those that it is the only thing that works, they should have it. Although I would be concerned about what the future might hold from the standpoint of others drs being willing to rx it and what would happen if drs were pressured to not prescribe it for chronic severe pain not related to cancer.

I have to agree with everyone here to just steer clear of this medication. IMO it is poison. This is from personal experience.

Drs like to give it to people too because it is so cheap. We all know how expensive some of these pain meds can be & some people do not have access to insurance coverage on scripts.

We had a member here several years ago that was on a huge dose & I know two different times she tried to get off of it & was not successful. To this day I do not know if she ever succeeded either.

It is not for short term use, you have the half life to deal with & should only be considered as a last resort. Notice I said considered not chosen. There are some very old threads here at the forum about Methadone if anyone is interested in reading.

Before ever considering it, talk to Vickie about it & let her tell you what is was like getting off of it.

I recall an episode of House several years ago where he took methadone to try to control his pain and every one of his medical colleagues was flipping out about it warning him of dying from using it, stopping breathing when he slept, etc, which happened once during the episode. The one thing that pissed me off during that episode, just like the rest of the series, is how House was made out to be an addict no matter what he took or that he was in pain. They never did come out and say how much methadone he was on or how much vicodin he was taking though, and yet while that show ran there were tons of people who came on here thinking they were addicts because they took vicodin more than once or twice a day for pain or had been on it for more than 2 weeks.
