Need Help!

Just my 2 cents worth but I have never agreed with the practice of using narcotics to wean someone off of narcotics. To my way of thinking it is like giving an alcoholic beer to get them to stop drinking whiskey.

I already stated that. It is like giving beer to an alcoholic to get them off of whiskey. There are other effective medications available like Clonodine that helps with withdrawal symptoms and since it is non narcotoc there is no danger of replacing or exchanging one addiction or dependance with another.

Jim, in this case the person is not getting off the medication because of addiction concerns but wanted to get a view of where their pain was at without meds. When a person isn't addicted there is no reason not to use a taper with the same or other narcotic meds. For those who cannot take them as prescribed and are stopping because of addiction issues then yes, tapers may not work because the person can not simply take a lower dose or amount of the meds. This is not a concern for this poster or those wanting to lower their dose or get off of narcotics for other reasons.
