First half) Hi everyone my is Chris, I am new to this forum. I have chronic pain issue that have a diagnosis but no solution. I get by in misery some days. I have a supportive wife and a beautiful daughter and we reside in the great state of Oregon--(GO DUCKS)! My pain is in my lower back and hip. Impingement and a arthritis and bulling discs. I have tried all medicines both, non-opioid and opioid up to 10 mg oxycodone immediate release ,scared to take anything else. I would like I reclaim my life! I have also taken physical therapy about 20 sessions. They have a surgery in mind but my insurance would rather keep me on medications rather than fix me. My dad died last Wednesday and my heart is broken over it. Well that's about all the intro I got for now. Have a great week everyone.

Second half). Thanks for the welcome. I had no clue how hard it is living with chronic pain. Pain makes life a bumpy road. It's good to know I have an outlet to discus what I'm going through. I have had a chance to find out how crazy the medical system. Also, the treatment of some doctors is absurd--especially when they can't figure things out. Thankfully, I have a good primary physician now. But along the way there has been some nonsense. I am fortunate in the fact I made it through school--graduation college his weekend. I employed with state government, but have had to miss quite a bit of work due to my medical issues--all documented of course. I have a misshaped femoral head bi laterally with arthritis. Also my L1,L3,L4 bulging discs with spinal stenosis. This is what the X-rays-MRI shows. I have had unsuccessful cortisone injections. The survey I need is an arthroscopic procedure-or a hip resurfacing. What ever it is Otho docs won't do anything with my insurance. Well that's about it for now have a great evening.

Welcome to the most wonderful forum Williams. I'm sorry that you are having such problems and I do hope that something will be done soon to alleviate the chronic pain that you are in. It's overwhelming at times when our bodies won't do what we want them to do and there seems to be no relief in sight. Just keep going and seeking treatments and if you are not getting good results with the doctor you are with, you may have to keep looking for one that will take you serious and treat your problems aggressively and come up with a great solution.

Good luck with everything and keep us posted on how things are going. You should be very proud of your accomplishments.

Hi Chris and thanks for starting a intro thread. I welcomed you in Mondays check in but wanted to do so here.

I also posed several questions and will go look to see if you answered. I will ask again here for the benefit of others.

Why would you fear long acting meds when they are smoother and cover the pain longer?

Second is have you talked to your insurance company and asked what the problem is? That's a fairly common procedure and not sure who is having the issues. Could be your particular surgeon charges far more than the insurance is determining the procedure should be and in that case they likely have a list of surgeons that work within the amount they cover. I've seen folks have awesome success with the resurfacing.

Hi Chris & welcome to the forum. Sorry to read what you have going on with the physical problems

Vickie has raised a good point about your insurance. I would certainly call them & find out why your surgery was denied. Sometimes insurance company's want a 2nd opinion before they will cover a surgery, but regardless I would be asking questions.

Most of us here are under the care of a pain mgt dr. People that have chronic pain have to jump through a lot of hoops in order to get care. The DEA is involved & with the guidelines & rules the drs work with it makes it tough for most of us.

Keep us posted on what you find out about this denial from the insurance. Take care.

You've found the best Site for people trying to live with Chronic Pain.

We're all broken in our own ways and everyone is on a different combination of meds that seem to work best for them.

Some have found the right meds,some,like me,are still searching.

Chris I do not know why you are afraid to try other medications. I can tell you this about them though.

1. People who actually need them and take them as prescribed rarely if ever become addicted to them. Yes they will become physically dependent on the medication but that is very different from being addicted to them.

2. So long as you do not have a prescription writing quack the odds of you overdosing is very, very low. Yes you can read a thousand articles about 1000 people overdosing on these meds but if you read very closely or get an accurate story you will find out that these people are on 5-20 different medications for pain when in reality they only needed to be on one or two.

Many people who live with chronic pain take pain killers every day and never have a problem with them because they are responsible with their medications and their doctor is also. For many people the medication is the only way they can have any kind of quality of life.

hi chris and welcome to the forum. am sorry to hear of your fathers passing. i can understand your not wanting to try strongers pain meds. i too used to not want to take them also. back before i injuryed my lower back i would rarely take asprin for a headache. but as my pain increased i was really left with out a choice. they do help and your doctor will know best what would work for ya. i hope your able to find some relief and that your doctor can help you out. do you have a pain management doctor? best of luck to ya. keep us posted on how things go for ya...

Chris,

I understand the apprehension about pain meds, but as so many before have posted here, many of us take them responsibly and they are one (of several) tools we all have in our little kit of things we do daily to take care of ourselves and have a quality of life that lets us do more than sit on the couch or in bed 24/7.

As was also mentioned, if one carefully reads all those articles about people overdosing, it can be noted they were not taking their meds as prescribed by their doctor. In many instances, they weren't even prescribed the med, but got it from other sources.

So please, do not be fearful. I'd encourage you to, instead, face whatever method of management you choose with a healthy degree of respect!

How are you doing?

I'm very sorry you're having a rough time and for the loss of your father.

I was very apprehensive about taking strong pain meds, I'd wait until it was beyond unbearable before I took any and suffered even more, they help and it doesn't mean you'll have to take them for the rest of your life, let them help you now.

I'd also talk to your insurance co. to see what's going on, hope you get relief, take care of yourself.

Hi everyone, I am under the care of an internal medicene doctor. I am thankful for this site am have been reading a guest for a long time now, but figured I would come in here and say hi and share a little about me. All of you guys have a great weekend! Happy Father's Day to all the dads in here. I currently have state insurence OHP-- state insurance. I am a limited duration employee for the state so no good insurence yet.

Thanks for posting here, Williams. I hope you get better. I'm sorry you lost your dad. I lost my mom ten years ago, and I still think about her often. It's so hard to lose a parent. Let people know how you're feeling; don't hold it in.

Consider getting insurance through the Affordable Care Act in your state. There are many providers available.
