Hey guys, haven't been on in a while. See that there are quite a few new members.

Want to welcome all of you! :) But it is sad that you have found your way here due to the horrible issues you face :(

Hope everyone has been doing great and getting through any rough patches that have come your way... :)


Recently been having some horrible issues with my family...going to my Psych appointment in an hour so, that'll be good.

Anyways...recently had my Norco dose lowered, placed on Butrans 20mcg(slowly worked up to it) and tried to switch from Gabapentin to Lyrica.

I was horribly sick for a week from it. Got impacted stools as well that week(due to taking a different laxative that DID NOT work obviously). And had to miss my Mother's B-day party/celebration.

Boy, it's amazing how non-supportive someone can be once they feel THEY are neglected... :/

Profusely apologized over and over. Was vomiting all over the place(though it did help with some pain...surprisingly).

My family's response?

"You need to go to rehab."

Over lyrica and Gabapentin? My wife tried explaining I was changing neuropathy medications.

"What the hell is that? Whatever"

Ignorance hurts so much.

Makes me want to just cut ties with my family and just be adopted from my Wife's family(They are waaay more supportive.)

I know some of you have the same issue with your family/mother. I feel your pain. Been crying all week...though in private. Hate crying in front of my wife. Haven't gone out much either...feel indrawn more than I have in my entire life.

God, I hate this $%*^.

I am Jodi from Alabama! lol. Hope u feel better soon. I have SOME small problems with my sister. She doesn't understand the agony I'm in due to the horrible pain. I don't go anywhere anymore except to church when I can drag myself out of the house. Hope you get to feeling better, praying for you.

You aren't alone in having to deal with other people having no clue. They see one news report or read one article and think they know it all. It is a crying shame that the only meds that the general public thinks of when someone is changing or stopping a meds and gets physically ill is opioids. Ignorance is a choice, just like education is. But, unless most people are having to go though it themselves, they choose ignorance instead of education. Education takes a little time and effort, ignorance doesn't.

Oh God, the things people say, it doesn't help, they just do not get it and you know what, you just take good care of yourself.

Sorry you're having a rough time Josh, I have terrible pain but because you can't "see" pain most people think i'm just fine, I'm not! Ignorance is bliss as they say.

I have been known to give a sermon of all my ailments and eyes glaze over, get a kick out of it at the end but....they said something dumb so....:)

I have a similar situation going, and I'm blessed by having the most amazing in-laws I could ever hope and pray for! Plus, Hubby learned over the years, and even his tune changed, and he came around. Now,...he gets it.

Some people think because *they* can take an aspirin for a *headache* that by taking narcotic meds (which they don't need),.....we must be trying to be absent from pain, or trying to get high.

I encountered this most recently with, none other than,...a surgeon I was sent to for a 2nd opinion. He sized me up and both he and his assistant made a snap judgment immediately. They did not take my history into account what so ever. This doc#2 said he'd only perform the surgery if I was totally off narcotic pain meds and if I was (get ready for this)....."more mobile." (Really?)

So see, this short-sightedness isn't restricted to family members and friends. We face this from medical professionals as well....

We learn to build our OWN private support system, (and this Forum is one aspect of mine!!)....and not rely on trying to convince those other people of our side of the situation, or try to change their mind,....or even try to educate them.

Their mind is made up, end of story. Don't waste what precious energy you have....it's not worth it.

Sorry to hear this, Josh. Sometimes the pain of being misunderstood is worse than any physical symptoms you may experience. I do hope you find support from your in-laws. How did your psych appointment go?

Oh gosh, I got horribly ill on lyrica, threw up every hour on the hour for 15 hours and almost ended up in the ER for dehydration. I was a mess and was shivering, crying and hubby went to work leaving me alone beside the toilet, it was horrible for me that day. I'll never ever try Lyrica again...

So very sorry your having trouble with your family, but really since chronic pain cannot be seen it is an over looked issue. I say RA and everyone understands, if I say chronic pain no one gets it...it is a common stigmata...

Hope things can get better with you and your family! Just keep trying to get them to understand, ask your psychologist for help on this, mine gave me great ideas to get it into my husband eye's what it's like for me...
