That quote and the discussion is very informative for all of us in the healing process.

Exactly Carrie! That litigation award use to go to Obstetricians then you saw a rise in splitting OB/Gyn practices to take on only Gyn and not deliver babys. Then the surgical procedures many and more advanced in Neuro and the rights of over use of the courts became theirs. Tighter restrictions on pain medication, limited therapy visits and injections, alternative methods for treatment by insurance companies, all pushing people to resort to surgical interventions and then many who never read the surgery permission forms, look into success or failures for the procedures they're agreeing to and add in the folks who take no responsibility for their post-op recovery, don't eat healthy, don't follow through with therapy, return to work before they've healed, refuse to adhere to the "do not " list and then want to place blame on the Surgeon for not healing properly. Fusions being at the top of that list of failed procedures.

Not saying by any means that there's not times those failures fall onto the surgeon but the majority do not and that leaves Neurosurgeons paying out more insurance premiums then the average middle class American makes in a year! Pushing them into the highest paid specialty in medicine and making it one of the least available options for countless noninsured, underinsured people. Insurance companies pushing for limited referrels,visits, and the reason the surgeons don't treat long-term.

It's a viscious cycle that only gets worse with the introduction of affordable care.

As for why Drs don't tell you this or that? The mass amount of new pharmacy formulary information added yearly is generally stuck in the guidelines and likely never seen by the Dr until the need arises and pharmaceutical reps aren't big on spreading word and informing Drs to the negative aspects of their products as with any salesman.

That's the reason we are constantly preaching to do your homework, investigate procedures, read what others have to say and know what your putting in your body!

While there are crooked doctors there are many who do the best with what they know. Part of the problem is that there is always new information available and another part of the problem is our society today which is sue happy.

Every day it seems like you have some lawyer or another advertising about this drug or that procedure and trying to get enough people to be able to file a multi billion dollar law suit.

The latest is against Xarelto, a blood thinning drug that does not require monthly blood tests. I am on Warfarin a drug in the same class but one that does need blood tests for and the side effects I have been warned about is the same as the ones they claim Xarelto is causing.
