For about 3 years now I have had this off and on back and chest pain. It's in my upper back around the spinal area and it's a stabbing constricted pain that goes all the way threw to my chest and takes my breathe away. I have fainted from it, blacked out, and I see spots. I could have this happen twice a week or only once every 6 months, there is no pattern to it, it can happen while iam sleeping or driving or working out. I have seen a cardiologist and a few other doctors, apparently there is nothing to be seen and I am perfectly healthy. Has anyone had any of this before? Or does anyone have any suggestions for me to do? I am starting to feel crazy with all the doctors telling me I am fine.

Hello & welcome to the forum. When you say drs have checked you out & everything appears normal, besides the cardiologist what type of drs are we talking about here? I doubt very seriously that you are crazy, there has to be something the drs are missing. If this were me, I would gather up copies of all of my medical records including any tests that have been done & get myself to one of the big teaching hospitals. I haven't a clue what is going on with you, but based on how long this has been going on, I would get in with a teaching hospital & be checked out. A lot of times folks just like you have a situation where the drs all say well I cannot find a thing wrong, but the problem persists & they end up at a teaching facility & get a diagnosis & help. Those drs have access to state of the art equipment that our main stream drs do not & they are always on the cutting edge of new things in the medical profession. Just my thoughts anyway.

Keep checking back here as the weekends tend to be slow. Folks are out and about doing things.

Hi there,

I had very similar pain, it was terrible in my upper back and would radiate around to the front, by my ribs.

Had MRI's and they showed nothing, I do have problems with my neck, herniated disc at C7-T1 and was told the pain in my upper back was actually referral pain, not saying that's what's going on with you though.

Sometimes, where we have the pain is actually not the problem, it's coming from somewhere else.

I know the feeling of feeling crazy when Dr's don't know what's happening.

Trina has good advice, to go to a teaching hospital if you can.

Have you had your neck checked out? hope you find answers soon.

I have gone to Two different cardiologist, my PCP, and a neurological doctor. Iv had 2 different stress tests a MRI and a few xrays. My family has a history of svt and when I mentioned what's happening to my gyn she said that could be in relation to the problem. But the research hospital sounds like a good choice. I am in nursing school and iv talked to some of my teachers about it and they givee a look like iam dieing. I figure iv had it for three years and haven't died yet and no one can find anything than hopefully I'll be ok. But thank you for all the advice I am going to gather up all tests that have been done and try a research hospital.

I have a similar pain in my left upper back and like you said, it takes my breath away. I had to go to the ER several times due to not being able to take a deep breath. I just recently found out that along with many of my other joints my ribs also get dislocated in the upper back area and stop my lungs from fully expanding. The pain is immense. None of the ER doctors or PT was able to help me other than muscle relaxers. Just recently I found a PT on youtube showing how to spread your own ribs. I also use a foam roller to push them back in place and ice it afterwards to reduce the pain. I was diagnosed with joint hypermobility syndrome that is a genetic connective tissue disease where the joint do not stay in place. It is a daily struggle.
