Question about RECLINER type for post op

Hi, and happy Wednesday,

I have read the list of helpful things to have after surgery, and I have a question that I haven't seen addressed in the threads.

I am scheduled for posterior cervical spine surgery 8-14. We have a recliner already, (we got it prior to my hubby's hip replacement about 10 years ago) It has the handle on the right side that you reach down to move the foot rest up and down.

My question is this: After having posterior surgery (or any, for that matter) will I be able to use this handle, or will I be too sore? I am just trying to cover all bases prior to the surgery so that things will be in place when I come home.

I had a wedge type pillow thingy from the medical supply store after my ACDFs, and I remember it was the only way I could get comfortable in the bed after both surgeries. Does this also help after posterior surgeries? I am wondering where you place your neck, and HOW, because there will be an incision down your neck.???

I am still reading through previous posts, and searching, as pain permits, so thank you all very very much.

I was able to use the side handle from the first day and push the chair back all the way to almost flat. That was important to get relief from holding my head up. I slept there a lot! Others have mentioned a 0 Gravity Recliner. That sounds good, too. I have another chair that has a button to push to recline but I moved from it the first time I had company and could not turn my head to see them. I much prefer my husband's swivel recliner so we traded. Taller Now just told about a chair alternative that sounds interesting. It's good to have options in different places around your home. My office chair has a high back that's comfortable to lean on when I've been here too long. It also swivels so I like that!

I tried sleeping on a neck pillow but a flatter pillow that I can scrunch up wherever I need it works better for me. The incision was not a great issue by the time I was out of the collar at 2 1/2 weeks. I have a wedge I've used to watch TV in bed but quit that after falling asleep on it, then waking up in pain because I had slumped to one side.

The handle seems easier than the ones that have a small button to push since everyone of those I have experienced are really small and really hard to push in. My chair has a handle but my couch and loveseat have a small disc like thing that has like a half moon shaped lever that only requires two fingers to release and its right under the arm of the things meaning easy to reach without having to reach or bend at all.

I have had neck and lower back surgery and Rt ulna surgery. I was unable to use my reclliner becasue of the neck and ulna surgery. I have a recliner with a motor that reclines and lifts the foot. I spent a little more money but it is worth every penny. Before I got it my husband was at my beck and call to rasie and lower the recliner. Mine is a Lazy boy but I know that most medical stores carry them.

My husband just told me that if this recliner is too hard for me to use, or hurts, he will RUSH right out and buy me a new one. (it would be my birthday and Christmas present combined! :) ) I am trying to get all of my ducks in a nice little row.
