shakehead Hi All, hope someone can help with this. I am a chronic pain patient and take morphine ER, gabapentin, and robaxin for chronic back issues. I broke my ankle a couple of weeks back and developed DVT (deep vein thrombosis) I was in a massive amount of pain and took a soma (old script) because I knew it would help and because I wasn't given anything else for pain. Upshot 36 hours later doc gives me UA should I worry will it show? Would hate to lose my pain meds because I took 1 pill from old script for pain. Thanks for your help.

If the UA was a drug screen, it may show up. It depends on what the drug screen was for.

Yeah no way to know what kinda test your Dr uses. Better to just don't, that one pill an however much relief it offered sure isn't worth the chance of losing your PM.

I agree Vickie but I really was not thinking clearly at the time; instead of thinking I was crying and rocking back and forth at midnight just wanting relief.

Thanks for responding. I hate the way the medical community has gone.

I was under the assumption that the screen was just the standard pain management ua. sad

Soma breaks down in your system, so it will probably test positive.
Especially if it is sent out for GC/ms testing.

Does this mean 100% i will lose my pm. I know I screwed up wont happen again never has happened before.

It will depend on how strict the dr is. But, the way it is now, if you don't you are far luckier than other people that do this.

I guess whats done is done and will have to wait and see. I guess if she comes back and tells me I will ask for another test and the second one will be clean. I have never done this before and certainly wont again. Thanks for the advice even if it doesn't ease my mind.

Does anyone know how long it takes for them to get the ua screen back?

Since it has been so long, I doubt she will give you another test. Sometimes when a pain dr fires a patient, the patient doesn't see the dr. They are told by the front desk or the nurse. Sometimes they receive a letter and sometimes they are told when they call or go to their next appointment.

confused I am unclear what you mean by so long? The UA was just given today. I don't know about being fired this doctor made it clear when I saw her for the 1st and only time that the MS Contin would only be given for one more script cycle and then I would need to go to the pain management clinic (will see on 30th and sign contract with them.)

I really do appreciate your advice and comments and rest assured I wont be doing that again ever.

Sometimes I wish the spinal condition I have would just pinch off the nerves to my legs entirely then it wouldn't hurt at all (not always just sometimes) drastic but there are times..

thank you all again for your comments. I am just going to meditate and hope really do need the morphine and didn't want to take more than the prescription so in my not thinking state I took the soma bad move I know and I will have to pay for it either through worry and anxiety or by getting fired. Not sure how to handle the pangs of my own stupidity. I am out of state for the next couple of weeks so should I wait for a letter or get an appointment for when I return? What is the best way to handle this your experience would be appreciated, I surely am not the only person who has made a mistake.

Just play it by ear here is what I would do. Are they aware you broke your ankle? As bad as this may sound it may be your saving grace here. I was reading my chart one day waiting on Doc to get in the room and I saw a tox screen that had hydrocodone in it and I do Not take it. I saw a note written in pen on the tox screen by my Dr saying "given via ER for COPD episode " I'm like thinking what? Then it dawned on me I had been in ER for a respitory thing I caught and do have COPD and they had given me cough medicine there. I'm guessing since I didn't see the ER report in there but I had told him about it he figured the ER is where it came from.

I never thought once about the cough medicine having anything in it, I was too sick I guess and just didn't dawn on me to ask.

Its possible that your Dr will assume you were given something for your ankle via ER, also possible it won't show at all and I'm not sure as to how fast soma clears your system. So wait and I think next time I would call and tell him your pain is off the charts for whatever reason and let them do something about it. It's really really not worth the stress of it all. Yes we have been there in the same fetal position crying but we're also the one's here trying to help folks like you who made one mistake try to get through the pain and withdrawal from losing their Dr and meds.

Soma will show up but you can always say that you were taking these before hand.  I don't think Soma will be a big deal but if it was narcotic they will probably drop you.

Is the dr who did the UA your Pain Management Dr? Do you have a signed contract with her? Then you will be going to a Pain Management Clinic on the 30th and sign a contract with them?

Soma metabolizes into the same metabolites as a particular drug, and most doctors won't prescribe soma anymore because it is the most popularly abused muscle relaxant.
Taking an old prescription is still a violation of the contracts, and pain management, so using the I was taking it previously, without a current, valid prescription, and the doctors knowledge still results in the same problem.

I am with Vickie on this one and just let this play out. Now you know & all you can do is keep moving forward. JP is incorrect with his info so do not rely on that info. Nearly all drs that once rx'd Soma for muscle spasms have stopped doing so because of the abuse factor.

I disagree mrsm123, while Soma is amongst the most abused muscle relaxer in its class any MR can be, hell any medication for that matter.

As for the OP, if the Doctor performing the UA didn't prescribe Soma then you may have issues trying to explain the situation. I don't see this as Doctor hopping or drug seeking, this is just my opinion. I don't think you'll be dropped unless there is more to the story than 1 pill.

I had signed a contract with a doctor who used to be at the same clinic as the doc who did the ua but the doc I signed the contract with up and left. The doc who did the ua saw me one time and told me she didn't do chronic pain but would give me 1 script for the morphine and I would need to go to a pain clinic.

Have appt with the pain clinic on the 30th and will need to sign contract with them then. Unsure of why this doc did the ua.
