breastfeeding and CP??

I'm not currently, but I did breastfeed all three of my kids, two of them while on some anti-depressants and occasional pain meds (vicodin, at the time) for terrible blocked ducts I would get at least once a week. My kiddos are just fine. My oldest is ADHD but he's actually the one that I wasn't taking meds with.

That said, you have talked with your pediatrician or a lactation consultant, right? I think too many opiates will slow your milk production. Make sure you're taking fenugreek, that stuff works wonders - or it did for me.

I would NOT no matter what the DR or anyone else says and simply because there is no studies,no long term data,no trials on the longterm effects of opiods in infancy but I can tell you that my Grandson was bron addicted to methadone and it was the ultimate most horrible thing I have ever had to watch anyone go through,that weaning him off on to phenobarb and morphine.

Since you obviously have your childs best interest at heart ,your breast feeding then go further and not subject him to medication that has long term effects that could be bad. Everything passes through breast milk in some amounts and I didnt want my child to have one grain of a narcotic in their system.

Its is healthier to give up one or the other,dont take your meds while feeding or dont breast feed,it is not necessary and he will do just as good if not better without the meds.

I cannot imagine any pediatrician okaying that long term and your Drs are not going to know the effects on a infant.

We have had many many CP moms here and none of them breast fed that I can think of,majority went off their meds while they were pregnant and stayed off if they were going to be feeding or they bottle fed.

Please get better information about this.

Your baby could already display signs of withdrawl by stopping now and if you have ever ever went through even the slightest ones you would not want your baby to have to feel like that because of something you did.

Back in Ancient Times, when it was not popular to breastfeed, I nursed 4 for a year up to 2 years each and did not take anything stronger than Tylenol throughout pregnancy and feeding, which was about 10 years when you add them all up, and all my deliveries were C-sections. My kids, and now grandkids, still come first.

Meds pretty much all get through to the unborn child, and after it's born if you breastfeed. With my 3rd, I was on antibiotics for a couple of days in the hospital. When we went home my baby spiked a high fever because we were no longer getting antibiotics. I had to take him back in.

Funny thing - The doc told me, "Well, I guess you'll have to give up breastfeeding." I said, "Why? I can hold him like a football even with this little IV in his scalp." And I did! They pulled a curtain around us, like it was nudity or something. I just laughed, and my baby gained weight and was just fine.

BTW..My doctor who prescribes the meds is my OB and my baby's 2nd pediatrician and her 1st pediatrician knows about the matter too. She delivered my baby and NICU kind of laughed at the idea of baby having withdrawal with the amount of meds I was on. I did have an issue with the anesthesiologist, he is the one who told nicu of the matter cause his opinion was different and he thought he would involved when he had no idea of doses I was on, he just heard that I was on hydrocodone. Like I said everyone has an opinion....

Yea and those studies show methadone to be the one drug with the least effects on an infant, that's why I said there are NO studies. Mothers of infants don't rush to sign up for studies and clinical trials to load up on narcotics to see what will happen. Your studies you are referring to are generally lab rats etc and infants are not animal's. Think about those studies and how accurate can they be?

I was just curious if anyone else was dealing with this. That's all..
