I had lumbar fusion with grafting and have a back incision & a stomach incision.. I hurt all the time,( not the pain before surgery) but a new pain, some people say it is the rods & screws.. Please any advice.. P.S. I just developed a large knot beside my incision that is painful to touch.. Anyone had this or know what it could be?? Thanks!!!

It could be a seroma....have you let your surgeon know about the swelling? If not, you need to.

Hello TG & welcome to the forum. Since your surgery was only 4 months ago a lot of the pain you are feeling is probably coming from the healing process itself & the surgery. Your body went through a lot trauma during the surgery so its going to take a good deal of time to completely heal & recover from your surgery. Try to be patient because the recovery time & how you take care of yourself is every bit as important as the surgery.

By all means get in to see your dr asap about the knot by the incision, it could be a possible hernia to scar tissue. This happened to a friend of mine that had the same surgery as you, she developed the knot, as it turned out it was scar tissue that had to be broken up. Be sure to tell your surgeon about the other pain you are having he is your best source to discuss this with.

The knot feels like a hernia, my surgeon hasn't called me back. Thxs for your reply. You can see the baseball size knot sticking out and it is very tender..

Welcome to the CP forum at HW and as Susie said it's a slow healing process and not one to push recovery if you want good results. Patience is difficult but your body is getting use to the hardware and invasion.

As for the knot if you have not heard back from the surgeon by now a trip to the ER is probably warranted,this could be nothing major and could be something dangerous and only a pictures going to determine that.

Also is the knot red and hot? It could be an abscess. Just a thought with it being tender.

Tg, if you have not heard back from the dr I would go in to ER, at least there they can do some xrays & get an idea what this knot is about. Let us know what you find out.

They still haven't called back, I called again today.. If they don't call today going to my family Dr in the morning.. She is also a personal friend and will get to the bottom of it. Will keep you informed..

I was truly afraid of that. Its the number one cause of knots that close to surgical incisions and well I know you don't feel lucky but that number 2 reason for them you wouldn't have wanted I assure you!!

The surgery is not too complicated or comprehensive and you should do great. Let us know when this is happening and we will put out a pre-op healing thread for you.

Oh Tg............................... I am sorry that you are now faced with an additional surgery. Yea, as I was reading and you said it was a "baseball" size knot a hernia was the first thing that came to my mind. Like they said it's not that big of a deal, I mean as far as correcting the hernia, you will do fine and be back home quickly!

Do take care and don't overdue it! No lifting or doing ANY strenuous activities or maneuvers, you will gain nothing but problems.

I am praying for you to heal again and your days to be brighter with less pain! Let us know when your surgery is scheduled for.
