13 years ago I had back surgery and have been taking Vicodin's though the VA. I moved to NV and I got another Provider. 6 weeks ago I developed bowel pain and I can hardly walk. I'm still trying to find out what is wrong with me. This new provider is evil (long story) He took me off of Vicodin's for a month which gave me a month worth of pain. He is going to do it again. I'm not addicted (another long story). In a couple of days I will pick up my last vicodin's. I have written up a full page on this doctor and the ill ways he has treated me and will give it to the VA advocate. What recourse do I have so I don't live the rest of my life in misery? I'm 68 years old and I would rather live 1 year without pain than 2 years with pain.

Is your provider a specialists, if not can you ask for a referral to a specialists in pain management?

No my provider, soon to be my x-provider is a quack but I'm going to put your suggestion in my notes. Thanks

If you're going to VA, you will probably have to see a pain management dr in the private sector to have you pain managed.

You mean he takes you off one month and then puts you back on again? What's his point other than cruelty? Seriously who gives a fig if your addicted or dependant at 68? I don't understand the whole thing about worrying if us older folks are addicted if that's what they're calling it, taking a med for 10-20 years as prescribed is dependant as far as I am concerned and addicted is those who can't get enough, never have enough and take whatever they can get their hands on. Huge difference!

I certainly don't get the notion the medical community holds about it not being OK to die with cancer related pain but OK to die with something else kinda pain. Who determined one kind of pains more inhumane than the next?

I'm really appalled by our VA to treat people this way but we sure hear that's what they do.

I have heard all about Drs reasons for not treating the older generation with narcotics, things like effecting mental clarity? Age does that. Causes constipation,age again, effects breathing, age does too.

I'm with you and give me a year with controlled pain rather than several without. I hope before that script ends you can find a decent Dr that will help you have a better quality of life then worrying about what ifs.

Lost, hopefully this time you will get a decent primary care at the VA. My husband goes through the VA to get his meds, he is diabetic & the two types of insulin he has to take are outrageous. The first primary care they assigned to him was a jerk & he refused to get him on the correct insulin. He switched drs & he had no more problems. Because you have chronic pain, you need to ask this new primary care to refer you to their pain mgt drs. That is the only way you will probably get someone to really listen. Their primary care drs are not into pain mgt. Let us know how this turn out.

He took me off the Vicodin's because I was taking Lorazepam and you can't take both. So he TOLD me he is taking me off Vicodin's. It took me one month to stop the script on Lorazepam’s which cost me a different kind of pain. Sunday I went back to the VA ER and had to be wheel in because I couldn’t walk in. So how does this provider help me by taking me from 3 Vicodin’s a day down to 2 Vicodin’s a day. The only reason I haven’t got a new doctor is because I’m waiting for my Vicodin’s tomorrow. He also sign off on a handicap tag for my car. After I get them I will be asking for a new doctor and I email my Medicare Doctor for help of this for a pain specialist or however I can be help. Also this doctor is so stupid he sends me 200 Stool Softeners when I explain to him that my bowels movements were the best I've had in years which does puzzle me but this is what I'm dealing with. The bottom line is I just want some peace before It’s my time.

I hope something can be done quickly. You sound miserable, and it certainly appears that the VA is at fault. I'm crossing my fingers that you can find a doc who is in your corner. It's possible to take both those meds together, but you'll need to be under the care of a pain doc who gives a darn(rated G word!)
