I can't say anything about
the shingles, as I've never had it, but I did have that feeling (like someone had put a tourniquet around my leg so tight that it was cutting off the arterial blood supply -- especially around my calf, but also my thigh) in one leg due to nerve root compression from spinal stenosis (lateral recess stenosis at L4-L5 compressing the L5 nerve root). I would get that feeling in my leg any time I stood, and the pain was so severe that I could not stand for more than 2 - 5 min, at most. Had surgery for it almost 4 weeks ago, and about
70% of the pain upon standing is now gone, and it continues to gradually improve with time. So you can definitely get this feeling from your back.
However, the swelling is not something that would be back related, and although the type of pain you describe is similar to what I felt with my back, I'm guessing that in your case, your pain is more likely shingles related, since your spinal stenosis was not clinical before. I also had other symptoms in my leg from my stenosis in addition to the tourniquet feeling upon standing, which I think are pretty typical of at least the kind of stenosis that I had. The other symptoms included pain down the back of the leg, extending into the foot that was not relieved by any specific position, but was best when lying on my side, and worst when extending my back, flexing my neck, walking, or sitting for prolonged periods of time. I also had weakness in my foot.
