My stomach feels like it is being sliced up?

I have had stomach pain in the past and have always considered it just simple discomfort.  I am now having such sever pain in my  stomach that it wakes me up in the night.  It feels like sharp intense pains, like I just ate glass or something.  I am 45yr and have never had stomach pain like this in the past.  Any idea what this is or why it is happening?  I have a very high tolerance to pain but this untop of muscle spasms and throbbing back pain is caving me in.

Sorry if I am sounding desperate, I just want it to go away.

It really sounds like you need to have this checked out - maybe even going to the ER. We have a lot of organs in our abdomnal cavity, so many things could go awry. If you don't want to go to an ER, I'd call your doc in the morning. Certainly if it keeps getting worse, go to the ER.

Or you could call the ER, and have them review your symptoms to see if it's ok to wait.

I cant go to ER as I have had extremely humiliating experiences in the past. (Ran home and took hot shower kind of experience)
I go to the doctor on Wednesday, I will keep sipping 7-up and try and cut down on aspirin and Advil which I am not supposed to take but I have to. I feel better coming here to this board then to some mean degrading ER doctor.(Who doesn't have a clue.) Where I live anyway.
I am feeling better, just a bit of pain under my ribs now. I am eating tums.

Ah, ok, Cloe - you know the NSAIDS are really tough on the tummy! You're eating Tums, but I can't remember which thread it was on but it was very recent here someone posted some ideas about soothing your stomach. A natural remedy of sorts was mentioned and I'm so sorry I can't think of it!! Look through some of the threads from the past couple of days and see if you can find the post. It's not a thread title, just a post in it. And if whoever wrote it sees this, maybe they'll post again. But I'd really try to nix the NSAIDS. You could have some bleeding going on and that's serious stuff!

How scary to hear you say you can't go to the ER! I can't imagine what they did to you, but I want to go in and yell at them a little bit for you right now! mad It is just dreadful that a person would be made to feel so horrible by the people you've gone to for help!

I found the post PaLady was talking about - with the home remedy. I hope something in it helps you. I do hope you call your doctor right away. If you don't want to go to the ER, is there an urgent care clinic in your area that you could call tomorrow? I hate to think of you suffering through another whole day like this!

Ry, I complained about the doctor at the ER. This doctor pretty much told me he couldn't decided if I was in pain or drug seeking. He demanded to know who my doctor was and said he was going to call and report my ER visit. It was during the day time, I only went to ER as my GP is off every Sat, Sun and Mon.
I of course went off on the ER doctor told him he didn't have a clue about chronic pain and needed to take a few re-fresher courses.
He then did settle down. But too late I was breathing fire. I got dress right in front of him(blush) refused to sign the paper work the nurse brought in, I ripped it up and I steamed out of there in tears.
I used to be so easy going. I believe that CPS has affected entirely- mind, body and spirit.

Does it feel like a sharp lancing pain? Does it get better with Tums? The reason I ask is because I had the same symptoms and I brought it up to my GI. He put me on Prilosec and I haven't had a problem with it since. I'm not sure though if I have gastritis or acid reflux - maybe a combo of both. But either way, you definately need to have this checked out. I can be something as easy as acid reflux or it could be a stomach ulcer from the NSAID's. You won't know until you have it looked at. Stomach pain is the worse!

Yes it is lancing pain and yes tums works. I at 4 before bed last night and it never happened. This is why I continue to blow it off is because it not a every day or night thing.
My sister has recently been diagnosed with acid reflux, I hope this is what is going on and I can continue to self medicate.

I get this pain too sometimes, especially after eating pear or some kind of fruit. It is excruciating like something stabbing you horizontally in the upper stomach across the bottom ribs and a pain right in the middle. I thought it might be a heart attack or something inside burst, and hope that it just passes. I don't know why eating pear causes this, maybe because I eat the whole core as well, even though it is soft?

I just drank lots of water and eventually the pain stopped.

I had a roommate in college from the Netherlands. I can still remember watching her bite into the top of a pear . . . stem and skin. And then she proceeded to eat the entire pear, from top down. Including the core and seeds and all. I was flabbergasted.

Eating the entire core and seeds of a pear is robust and industrial eating. Little wonder you have upper gastric pain after consuming a pear.

Next time, eat the flesh of the pear or an apple around the core. Do not eat the core and seeds. See if you feel better.

Apple and pear seeds have trace amounts of the precursor to cyanide. Mind you it would take a lot of pear seeds to become toxic, but since you report feeling unwell after eating a pear making the decision not to eat pear seeds might be to you advantage.
