Question for the ladies - Novasure

Hello everyone!  I think this is my first post here on the Chronic pain forum because even though I do suffer from chronic pain from my Ulcerative Colitis (and a few other problems) I never really posted on here - mainly because I am not so bad - pain wise that it interfers with my daily functions.  But I have a question for the ladies if you don't mind me asking?

I have always had extremely painful periods and it wasn't until recently that I started to get such severe pain that I would almost fall to my knees in agony.  It was that sort of pain that sent me to the GYN to find out the cause.  2 weeks ago I had a D&C, laproscopy and hysto - something or other (I can never remember what its called!) but it's a scope.  He didn't find any cause for my pain - no fibroids, no tumors, no polyps, no endo.  But since I've had the D&C, the constant cramping has ceased (which is a blessing for sure!).  Because I'm 37 and not having any more children, the doc recommended that I have the Novasure Endometrial Ablation done to help control the amount of bleeding and pain during that time of month. Maybe even end my periods all together.

So I was wondering if any of you ladies have had this procedure done and if so, can you share your experience?  Did you have much pain afterwards?  Did it help you?  If you suffered from horrid cramps, did it help it any?  Any thing you guys can tell me would be highly appreciated!  I just want to know whats going to happen and the procedure date is set for October 16th.

sad   Hi Sherry, I can relate to your problem.  I am considering the nova sure procedure because my periods are soo heavy.  The doctor says this should stop my periods or at least slow them way down, which would be a blessing.  My last blood work showed I was borderline anemic.  I'm so tired of the cramping and heavy blood flow.  I have put the procedure off for a while now, but I think I'm ready to go forward with it.

 

      I was wondering if your not having a period, could this throw your body into early menopause??   Let me know what you decide.

Not that I know of. The ovaries are still intact after doing the Novasure. It's the ovaries that produce the hormones Estrogen and Progesterone. Estrogen prompts the release of the egg from the ovary (it also signals the uterus lining to build up), once the egg lays dormant and dies, progesterone is then released to allow the shedding of the build up in the uterus. But now I'm just wondering what happens to the uterus if the build up doesn't occur because it's the lining of uterus that gets burned off during the Novasure. Hmm a question to ask the doc about.

Menopause is when the ovaries stop producing hormones.

Hi Red :) I did have this procedure done in May of 06, and it has been WONDERFUL!! My periods havent stopped <dang it> but they did get to be actually what most people would call normal to light. I suffered for about 13 years with extremely heavy periods. IF I had them I would take percocet or Vicodin to dull the pain. My procedure took about 45 minutes. I went home with bad cramping <the nurses forgot to send home percocet with me> and within in a day or so I felt good. I would recommend this procedure. I was thrilled with it.

I heard nothing but great stories about this procedure and even though I'm a little nervous about it, I'm looking forward to the afterwards. I guess I just don't want to feel anything when I'm having it done. I'm going to under mild sedation and the Novasure only takes 90 seconds - it's the prep time that takes the longest I guess. I also have to be careful of any narcotic pain relievers because of my Ulcerative Colitis so I'm not sure what they're going to send me home with. I think they said Vicodin but I can only use that sparingly. All I know is that I am so hoping this will end the extremely painful periods - they're excruciating!

The novasure process is more useful to us, I still have heavy bleeding, although not as severe. I still have blood clots and very bad cramps, which I did not have before, and the novasure is more useful for the womens, http://www.drherzogwomensspecialist.com/

Hi Red! I thought I'd pipe in here and tell you that my best friend had this done last year. She was having the severe bleeding, but not the pain you talked about. They gave her general anesthesia, though. After the procedure, she has also had much less bleeding but it hasn't stopped her periods altogether. Even so, she is glad she had it done. I am wondering, though, for you if they are sure this is the source of your pain. Have they tried you on BC or anything else to see if the pain can be controlled that way? The reason I ask is that I am experiencing similar things (I still think you are my doppleganger! LOL) and am at the point of the big H now. But I am about your age so my doc tried several treatments first like BC and also Lupron shots. During that time, I had two D&C/Cervical Biopsy/Hysteroscopy procedures as well. For me, the Lupron actually helped for about a year. Then it lost it's effectiveness and so here I am preparing for surgery. I just wondered if it might help you too and save you an operation? I did find a site that is dedicated to this kind of issue called HysterSisters that you might explore a bit. It might have more information for you too.

Wow this post is old! I've already had the Novasure endo ablation done and it is THE BEST thing I could have done! I haven't had a period in 7 months and I no longer have that horrible debilitating monthly pain. No more drop to the floor type pain - lordy was that horrible! I also had a D&C done before the ablation which was the clincher for me to have the Novasure done because the D&C did wonders for my monthly pain until the lining grew back. Then all heck broke loose again! But I did try progesterone before resorting to this and it made my cramps even worse and I can't do bc's because they give me horrible migraines. Ry if you feel that you never want children (or anymore children?) then you should give the ablation a go. It is much safer then a hysto and it doesn't take as long to heal. Unless of course your doc doesn't feel if you are a candidate for the Novasure? I just had my check up a couple days ago and asked the doc if there was any chance for my uterine lining to grow back. He said more then likely no but he can't predict the future and if it should happen we will worry about it then.

Hey, Red. Wow, I didn't even look at the date on your original post. That's the second time I've responded to an old post that somehow got popped up to the front page again. LOL!

Thanks for the advice, Red. Unfortunately, my issue extends beyond what could be treated with Novasure.
