Nerve Pain in Leg- meds?

I have had the nerve pain in my leg for awhile- Mostly my left leg but occassionally on the right side also. I have about 4 things going on in my lower back- I dont know the terms but for sure 2 bulging discs in l-4 & l-5 with nerve damage. I have had the injections & nerve block with no success. Has anyone been given a rx for this? It used to be just a tingly feeling but more recently has developed into burning and cramps in my upper leg- almost like a leg cramp you would have as a child. And my legs have taken to jerking upright in my sleep. Nothing painful, just like someone was knocking the little hammer the drs have on your knee to test reflexes. Has anyone gone through this with any success??

Hi Kt, I have PN in my hands & feet, which is a nerve pain. I take Lyrica for this and it has helped me alot. I also have the jerking of the legs and I am on Requip and it hels. Susie

Hi kttn, I have pretty much the same thing wrong as you do, has been a problem for almost 20 years, in Jan of this year I had a spinal column stimulator implanted, and that helps alot, but not all, so I am also on duragesic 75 patches, and most importantly Neurontin, as much as needed, which when Im working it is around 5000mg that dose sometimes will make ya a little goofy but it sure helps with the burning of the nerve pain, and I am on my feet all night 10-12 hours as a machinist, so I would definatley recommend that or Lyrica, which is made for the nerve pain. Hi. I have been on Gabapentin (neurontin) and it's saved me. I have a hard time waking up in the morning but this is the only thing that allows me to sleep through most of the night and not go crazy with nerve pain during the day. I hope you find something that helps you.

Thanks for the replies everyone- seems like Lyrica is the popular choice. Has anyone had any side effects?

Hi there new to this nerve conduction test i have been reffered to getting one and was wondering what it invovles I read on the net that they do two test electromyogram and the nerve study do they always do both tests or sometimes just one as i am not sure what my doc has ordered i can call his office to find out but rather not. Thanks to any responses. Twiggy2

Hi Twiggy... welcome! the nerve tests were the easiest of them all to me. basically they put some sticky pads with wires and send little electric impulses to various parts of your leg. they look to see how long it takes for the nerves to react, if it even reacts. its painless. if you do have some issues they will normally get you a tens unit- i swear by mine, i have a lot of muscle spasms. it sends little pulses to the muscles to help them relax. when is your test? it took mine about a week to get the results (the testing company was outsourced) let me know if there is anything else you need... by the way, whats going on?

Chronic back pain, DDD, bulging discs from T12 to S1 some mild to broadbased, compressed disc in the subnarcroid where ever that is, muscle spasms, burning stabbing pain is the best to describe it. I started to notice that i was getting some pain in my big toes, and now the most recent after seeing my doc never had it before but i knew what it was was leg pain like someone took a razor and went from butt area down to my ankle. I am asuming it;s nerve pain? So they never used needles during your test just the electric impulses. Don;t have an appointment set as of yet but prob within the next week or so i should here from docs office with a appointment date. I'm having the same problem as you are. I have a broad based protruding disc in L4-5 and disc degeneration. I also have bone spurs in my neck along with sciatica. oh yeah and migraines to boot.

Doctor gave me lyrica but I've only taken one pill, I really don't want to take it due to gaining weight on it. I take a musclel relaxer/zanaflex it helps a little. just sitting here typing hurts my neck muscles so better get going.

Both my arms jump from my syrinx and I take Keppra . all the other meds Lyrica and neurontin and Amertiptiline all cause weight gain . the Keppra has done the trick no more jumping.

wow- i didn't know they did the needles. i guess though when you go through something that is life-long, you get used to needles. what made it painful for you?

i didn't think it was bad at all. what i did was easy i thought. it does make your nerves a little sore, i thought... but if you are having chronic pain, i think its very small in comparison. Twiggy, when is the big day? you will be relieved to have it done and get the results so they can start a treatment plan for you. just look at it that way. i was very happy to know i wasn't going crazy. lol.

Thanks i think i will call my docs office to ask what i;m getting done if it;s just the electrodes i can possibly can request the needle thing to just to be sure i am covering all areas possible, Not sure but i do know that i am always tired even if i sleep at night i sleep some during the day as well is this common i just curl up and fall asleep mainly cause when i rest i don't have as much pain. Is this wrong of me to be like this anyway thanks for all the great advice and will let u all know what tests im getting done but so far i don;t have a date set yet. Twiggy2

wow, you have a problem the majority of us would kill for! i would be so happy to get an 8 hour night sleep not interrupted! take advantage while you can! actually, i hope that never changes for you- thats fantastic! i have had acupuncture done before, i guess that may be very similar... no pain what so ever. don't sweat it whatever it is- it may be a vital key in helping yo get better..... thats how i look at blood tests.... they can never find my veins. i usually get poked about 2 or 3 times until they give up and get an anesthiologist. (sometimes that dosen't work) i have had it through my hands, wrists, feet and was threatened last time for behind my arm. and i drink about 10 glasses of water a day alone. so i know how if feels to dread something, but i know its important. hang in there! and happy dreams! :)
