Hello all!

I am wondering if anyone can answer a question for me.  I am starting a new job (hopefully) and they are going to give me a pre-employment drug test.  I am on oxycontin and Klonopin.  I am prescribed both of these medications by my pain management doc and I take them both as directed.  I know I will test positive for opiates.  Am I going to have a problem with this or will it be ok being I am legitimatley prescribed these?????  What should I do?  Will I be OK???

Hi Shaw,

I've never gone thru this but I'd take a note from the doc so they know what will show up. Your doctor and pharmacist will know how to handle this as I'm sure it happens to many folks on pain meds.

Shaw - you should have no problem with the medications. When I was looking for a job awhile ago - I had a drug test - brought along the information of the prescriber and what I was taking, dosages and such, and was fine. The only thing that might have an effect is if you are going to be some sort of job that cannot allow people on such medications to work for them. For example if my husband were to get prescribed an opiate, or any medication that would effect his critical thinking - he would be required to bring a letter in and his duties would have to change during the time he was on the medication. He works on aircraft, and his mind not being at 100% would be dangerous to a great deal of people.

Just make sure to inform the testing facility before you pee in the cup. ;) You are not required to inform your (potential) employer and they shouldn't make you provide proof but a note from your doc or copies of your script s given to the testing facility cant hurt. Thanks for the info all.  I go to the interview tomorrow (3rd one).  One more question for you.  Most of you said just bring a copy of the scipt or a note from the doc...... is it ok to just bring the bottle that the medicine is in?  the one that the pharmacy gave me? you know the one that has the med, the dose, time to be taken and your name and all that stuff?  I am sure this would be sufficient. Do you all think so?  I just dont feel like getting notes from the doctors and such because that stuff can take forever,  I am sure all of you know how hard it is even to get in touch with someone who can fax that stuff over much less in a timely fasion.  I would actually think it would be some kind of discrimination if an employer did not give you a job becuase you were legally prescribed something that helps your quality of like and helps you work.  The only way I can even work is with my meds, injections, PT and a back brace.  Anyway wish me luck on the job.  I really want it bad.  Thanks to all......

From my own experience, which is pretty extensive (unfortunately I change jobs frequently), you will not have a problem. I wouldn't even tell the place where you are getting the test done. Usually the testing facility sends out the sample to a lab. If they find anything, a doctor from the lab is supposed to contact you, to find out any information they might need. One reason I say I wouldn't tell the testing facility is because it's none of their business. I've had 6-10 pre employment drug screenings in the past 10 years, and not 1 of them was done by a doctor. In fact 2 of them were done by some private investigator type guy. For clarification I would call you doctor or pharmacist and ask them what you should do. This is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. Good luck!

I am sure that your prescription bottle should be enough. Please try to relax, worrying only makes the pain worse.
