First welcome to the forum 24 and Still and yes this is a great place to call "home" and I hope both of you stick around to share your experiences as well.
As Mochiah stated there is another thread re:the oxy thing on page 2 I believe and it gives some pretty good info in it as well.
The recall was more of a legal injunction then something being wrong with the generic. Purdue"s patent had not expired from what I understand and the makers of the generic kind of jumped the gun, this battle could be over tomorrow or it may be going on long after the patent actually does expire,it is all in the court system with no thought to the patients being hurt by this.
Before I touch on the benefits of both of those meds in comparison let me ask either of you if you have applied for Purdue's patient assistance program? This program is designed to supply those without the money or means to pay for oxy to them and they have an online application to get started and your Doc should also be able to assist you with info about this program, simply you will get your meds delivered to you or your Docs office once a month free of charge and based on your financial abilities.
The partnership program asissts alot of folks with oxy that otherwise couldnt get it so please look into it and I will try to find the link and post here for you but not too good at that getting links here that work. Lol Maybe someone like Gramps being teh great person he is can lend a hand and lead the way for me?
To answer your questions on weighing the pros and cons of switching meds well that is really more difficult as morphine is by far cheaper and as with anything else it is going to be individulaized as to how well the switch works for each of you. You may also want to look up a conversion chart for these meds and you can google just that, narcotic conversion charts,so you have some idea of how much morphine it will take to make the switch nice and smooth and now your Doc will be the deciding factor here but I like to be educated in these things before I leave my pain issues up to others even my Doc as he isnt a CPP!
You certainly dont want to be in pain or suffer from w/d type symptoms from not having the correct amount of meds during the conversion as it seems you have lives that require you to get up and go and be coherent.
Morphine does seemt o effect some in a foggy kind of way so you may have to regulate the doses and may have to do this switch at a time when you dont need to be completely top notch and not in a brain fog.
Opana seems to be the med most want to try when coming off oxy to something else and again talking to your Doc and weighing in his thoughts is a good place to start as Opana is a newer kind of med and alot of Docs dont have the experience under their belt to feel comfortable prescribing it yet. Some tend to fall back on reliables like MS contin and dont venture even out of norm to the varied forms of morphine available now,re:kadian, oromorph, just to mention a few as there are others.
Again welcome to the forum and others will chime in here and add their expereinces for you as that is what this place is all about. You can and will get alot of advice and info and what you take away from here with you is your ultimately your choosing.
Hopefully I can find those links for you and if not someone else can.
