MRI tomorrow. Possibly surgery after. But I have a question

I am going for my second lumbar MRI tomorrow. Last time I was given the perfect sedative but cannot remember the name. And I have sinse switch doctors.

My new doc has given me 15 Lorazepam. They are 2mg each.

Well since I have all this pills, I figured I would try out a few, and see how many would be needed to get thru the MRI. I took 1 yesterday and it didn't do a thing. I took 2 2gm pills today and I just feel very slooow and neutral, but not out of it.

My question; would 3 be too much? My MRI is nessecary so I need to be SURE I can get thru it.

I am not going to give you specific advice as to how much medication to take, but unless you have a serious problem with claustrophobia you shouldn't need to be unconscious. The lorezapam (a sedative and muscle relaxant) should have a dosing recommendation on the bottle which says the max. your doc would want you to take at once. I'd follow that, and make sure you have someone to drive you there and back.

I wouldn't think you'd need 3 pills in any case, as you don't need to be out of it. So follow the instructions on the bottle and if there are none, I'd call your doctor's office in the morning and check. You could also ask your pharmacist.

By the way, if you have serious difficulty with regular MRI's, you might ask your doc if you can use an open MRI machine in the future, although I've heard they may not be as powerful as the tubes.

I'll second what PaLady just said! You just need to take off the edge of the nerves, not be out of it. If 2 made you feel slow and neutral that may be just right. But do check like Palady said.

Also, one things a tech did with me for an MRI was so smart yet simple. I do fairly well but hate when I open my eyes and see everything SOOOO close. So he took a fresh wash cloth and covered my eyes. That's all it took! Can't see so I was totally relaxed. The next one I had the place had flax seed eye pillows that you get to take home. Tuck a wash cloth or eye pillow into your purse before you go and ask them to place it over your eyes. You can't believe how much easier it is that way!

I have no problems getting MRI's I have had several just this year. Some hospitals have a new one that just has sort of a plate that moves over your body about three feet above you. Im not sure if it does the exact same thing as the other. I think it is just relaxing just to lay down , no problem for me. But I have a friend who has gotten out of one and run to her car in a panic. Speaking of panic I get panic attacks for no reason at all and was prescribed lorazapam 1mg. to calm me down. One is usually all I need. You can take a total of 3mg in the course of a day. Not all at once. So by taking 2 2mg tabs you have already gone over the top. Be careful. june
