generic pain meds

Hi and welcome. I'm not sure your question has an easy response. I think much depends on the particular drug, and the particular generic. If you read up on generics, they don't have the same required specifications as brand names; I believe the active ingredients can range from between 80% to 120% of the brand name's in the generic, and each generic may have a different manufacturer. Sometimes you can find a generic that's fairly stable, and quite similar to the brand name and there may be little to no difference. On the other hand, there may be quite a bit of variability, especially when inactive ingredients are considered. Things like extended release formulas I think can be problematic as they may not release in as stable a manner as the brand. I'm not a pharmacist, but have learned through some trial and error as well as from a little research. i know generic oxycontin was recently discontinued because of a patent issue and although I don't take that particular med, some of the people on this forum who do are saying the brand name (which they now have to take as there's no other option) is better than the generics.

I'll wait for some others to chime in, but a lot may depend on how the particular drug affects you, as well as (sad to say) what your insurance will cover. In many cases, generics are mandated.

Hi Peace.

I know from personal experience, that taking some of the antidepressants, like Pamelor, caused a difference in my depression. I don't take that drug anymore, but for years, my doctor insisted I get brand name because the generic was not as effective. I take generic percocet for pain and it works the same as the brand name for me.

As for the OTC drugs, I find the generic works pretty well for me. Cold remedies, ibuprophen, aspirin and acetominophen work pretty much the same as the brand names.

I guess its safe to say that generics are good. They are less expensive and work fairly well. There are exceptions and doctors can help you out there.
