I am curious to hear what people do to handle the shooting pains caused by impacted nerves. The pain meds don't seem to touch or change them at all. Is there anythign other then lyrica/topamax/nuerotin type drugs out there?

Thats about the only ones I know of. There is an old drug called amitriptiline (?) not sure of the spelling. I do know yrs ago when RSD was first on the realm they put many people on this drug w/some benefit. Its drug that has to be titrated up w/doseage. Also, you must taper down when getting off of it. How I wish there was! I can say that the percocet I take does help some with the sharper pains, but I have to combine that with neurontin and effexor (an anti-depressant that helps a bit with nerve pain) to get any relief in the numbness and tingling in both feet. Have you tried cymbalta? it's an anti-depressant that helps with some nerve pain, but unfortunately I don't think there's any one drug that takes care of it all. Lyica is the newest one, but it sounds like you know about that. Nerve pain is the biggest challenge I've ever found. I'll take muscle spasms any day, as I can do more to relax them.

Let me know if you find anything else! Oh - using a TENS or similar unit can help some. I have one I use prn. Plus lots of heat off and on.

Voltaren gel.

It's topical & does have it's limitations, but it definitely does make a difference in the shooting pains when combined with the Lyrica I'm on. They gave out a lot of samples, so maybe your doc can even get you some to try for free.

I finally got a spinal cord stimulator b/c I just couldn't take it anymore. That took care of the nerve pain completely. :)
If only they let US docs implant the SCS's that can be run to both the low back & the neck. :( Then I could have no pain at all.

my doc gave me a sample of that and it did help a little bit...after all of these years with nerve pain shooting/pulsing, i don't remember anything helping except lyrica or this gel...

 

it would be nice......in a perfect world we'd all stand up straight and do housework. tongue yeah

I have pudendal nerve entrapment (PNE).When I stand I get shooting spikes of pain from the back of my thighs to the middle of my back.Within 20 to 30 seconds my legs give out and I fall down.Neurontin type drugs don't help much, in fact they cause me to pee myself when I get the pain spikes if I take over 1000mgs/day.The only way I can walk with short crutches now is with a cocktail of morphine,oxycodone,gabapentin and xanex.My Dr. tried me on dilaudid and fentynal patches but both caused bad side effect problems long before any pain relief was felt,so back to morphine I went.It helps for me but only at a high dose.
Ekkorose,I hope you and your Dr. can find a better combo of drugs to help stop more of your pain.Take care and good luck.

My nerve pain was so intense I had to go on opoid drugs and now I am much better. for short term and in conjucntion the voltaren gel is very good as your previous email suggested.   sue2z  I use to feel like I was plugged into a socket the pain was indescribable.

I too have the impinged nerve at L3-4 but mine they say is too close to my spinal canal for surgery to aleve the pain and too deep for the pain medications to help. I am on Topamax since August and it has seemed to help a tiny bit but the side effects are horrible as I sleep all the time and I seem to get tons of muscle spasms on top of what I have. They also placed me on Robaxin for the muscle spasms which really make me feel like a zombie and some steroid/anti inflammatory cream for the topical pain to help. I have a knot on either side of the top of my hip bones on my back that hurts like hell and if pressed on can really cause much pain down my legs but they have never injected them. Kinda wish they would just once to see if that would help a bit anyway.

Unfortunately there is nothing that can help with my nerve pain except placing a Neuro Stimulator in me and that has begun to be started once again. Let's see if WC of WY will go for it this time (won't hold my breath for a go response)

I know what you mean about sleeping all the time because im the same because of the drugs. I just slip in and out all day long.  sue2z mad mad

Hey Scarred why not ask for some trigger point injections in your back to help get the spasms down. I had taken one of my notorius falls here in the house not too long ago and I am going to tell ya, I was miserable. Nothing helped with the pain. I had 8 injections done one day and let me tell ya, a couple days later, they were nearly all gone along with the radiculopathy type symptoms that was happening. Trigger points really not all that bad unless he hit a real bad area and he knew when he hit a bad spot cause he had trouble getting the needle to go in due to spasms. Hope you get some relief some how. Susie

Hey, I am on amitrityline, lyrica & cymbalta..... it never really stops, but it calms it down enough to where I can stop my legs from moving. There are also the nerve block kind of like straydog is talking about except the deaden the aggrevated nerve.... deaden may not be the right word..... ask your dr about it. its an easy procedure, the same as a trigger injection.... light sleep, i have even been awake during it. They can last up to in a few years if they get the correct one. You may have to have it done a time or two to get the right results. They have done both legs, my right had success, i barely feel anything, especially with meds. But my left leg is another story. I love lyrica.... they had me on neurontin before, but I had no results. Not strong enough for me. Maybe ask about it, ask for some samples..... see how it goes. I also have fibro... it helps a lot with that too. (I also take cymbalta, it helps too) I was on Robaxin in the beginning, when I went to my PM dr he said it wasn't strong enough to help my pain. I too have a strange break in my lower vertebrae, its on the inside of my spine, they can't operate. I also have 6 herniated discs.... are you ok with telling your dr you are not getting enough pain relief? We are our own advocates. They don't know if we don't tell! And btw, I would give ANYTHING to have a good nights sleep....at least you are not up all hours of the night. I max out on all my pain meds within a matter of months. They gave me dilaudid for a trial & I felt nothing. SO they upped my BT oxycodone to 6 pills a day. *sighs* Good Luck.... PS amitytiline is one of walmarts $4 drugs.. cheap! and it helps with depression & insomnia... not a miracle drug.... but together with other meds it can help.
