Hi everyone!

Well, tomarrow is my surgery date to have my hysterectomy! I spoke w/ my ob/gyn yesterday to discuss pain management since i have been worried about it all. He is assuring me that i will be ok and that he will NOT allow me to be in alot of pain. We discuss how everytime im admitted, (several times a yr for my UC) the hospital always gives me dilauded (sp)? and it just does NOT work for whatever reason....I always have to ask for more which always leads to problems with nurses and doctors alike....

We discussed maybe trying a morphine pump and if that did not work trying to use dilauded and demeral in intervals (which is what they used after my csection that worked well for PM.

Anyways, please wish pain free thoughts for me, and im praying for a easy recovery!

Good Luck! Remember to take it easy for at least 6 weeks afterwards. You only have one chance to heal right.

A few unasked for hints that made my recovery a lot easier:-)

  • GAS X is your best friend. The gas bubbles are real killers. Ice helps for the first day or so \
  • Take something afterwards to prevent hard poo. That is a pain like no other!
  • Take cough drops or somethign to suck on while in the hospital, the air drys you out!
  • Chapstick is also good.
  • Rest, rest and rest. While your body might look like it is healing there are a million little stitches inside that you don't want to pull.
  • Lots of pillows, on the bed, the coach, in the car home. They help when you laugh, sneeze, cough or fluffy wants to cuddle.
  • WALK as much as you can. It is hard but it gets everything going. It is good for you.
  • When your belly gets a little swelly, it is normal. Annoying but normal. Jeans are not comfortable till around week 8 or 10. Also, if you wake up a size 8, you will go to bed a size 12.
  • If anything concerns you, call the doc. An annoyed doc is better then a trip back to the castle.

Good luck. You are very smart to discuss pain management before your sugery. I wish that I would have. I have chrons and therefore could not take any anti-inflamitories after surgery. Can you with UC? Please make sure, so that they do not try to give it to you after sugery. I also was on a Morphine drip. Make sure that you are honest about your pain level. I Wish that I had stayed one more day for the pain. So if you can, stay another night if you are still in pain. Vicodine worked well for me at home.  

The most important thing to remember is to do not do anything that you are not supposed to , so that you can heal. Any scar tissue will cause you pain.

Good luck shannon! I'll be thinking of you tomorrow & saying a prayer for your surgery to be successful & as painless as possible, and for you to heal quickly! Let us know how it went once you feel up to it!

Hi Shannon,
I just said a little prayer that when you wake there is no pain at all and that you continue with very little pain through out your stay in the hospital and whole recovery! I hope this prosedure helps you and releives any and all problems you have had. I had a radical prostatectomy which probably has similar recovery methods. The Doc told me to never lift anything more than a couple pounds. So let someone else take the garbage out and anything else that needs to be moved, picked up or put away! Don't even poor milk out of a full gallon jug! Please be safe and get well sooner than soon! No hugs, don't want to hurt you but I'm thinking and praying for you!

Good luck tomorrow Shannon. You were given terrific tips by Ek pay close attention to them. The pillows are going to be your best friend when you have to cough or get up & down out of bed. Just take the pillow and yes put it to your stomach-I promise it will not hurt and hold it close to you.

Above all walking is the very best thing to do. It will help wake up your bowels from the surgery and get them going, plus it helps get rid of excess gas that we seem to get when having surgery and it will also help you get your strength & staminia back. Just hang onto your pillow when walking.

My dr said no driving the first 6 weeks, I tried at 5 and it was a disaster, yes they tell you this for a reason.lol Take care. Hugs, Susie

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all the prayers and well wishes!!!!

I had surgery last wed. It was a hysterectomy done by laperotomy (open inscision, rather than by small holes). It was a 2 hr surgery and my doctor ended up removing my appendix also as it was actually sitting in me upside down! LOL Turns out my ovaries were covered with 5, yes 5 cysts!

The hospital sucked, nurses were horrible. MY ob was great as far as pain management went! He even chewed out my nurse after i complained that she was only giving me half of the dose of med that he ordered! NICE!!!!!

I am home and healing slowly.....still in alot of pain, but it's better than two days ago. Pathology came back saying that my uterus was taken over with my endometriosis. Stage 4 endo! So, im feeling really happy with my decision to do the hysterectomy!

So glad to hear that you are back home & doing okay. Sounds like you made a good decision to go ahead with the surgery. Keep taking it easy. I hope that with each day you start feeling better & better!

Warm and gentle hugs! I'm so happy to hear you're back home and not in that hospital. I had an experience where the nurses were so bad the I could hear the doc yelling at them clear down the hall...lol

Anyway, prayers for a speedy and easy recovery. Keep us posted!
