Anyone with implants/hardware have to take antibiotics before denstist appointments?

Someone had posted about this on another board and I was just wondering if anyone here has had experience with this? She had a fusion, I believe, and had to take 4-days of antibiotics before having a cleaning. Has anyone here had to do that?

I was told by a dentist once that I had to do that b/c there was a chance that I might have to have a filling. I've never had a filling in my life & take very good care of my teeth, but he got the idea in his head that he was going to have to drill & that I should take antibiotics as a precaution.

I talked to my NS about it. He said the dentist was crazy & that it was people like that dentist that were the reason we now have superbugs like MRSA. Now, I would take the word of my NS over some dentist any day, but I got a second opinion from another NS & the surgeon who implanted my SCS (an anesthesiologist). All 3 of them agreed that it was not only unnecessary to take antibiotics for a dental procedure just b/c I had had surgeries & hardware from months prior, but that it was also dangerous since it would decrease the effectiveness of antibiotics when I really do need them.

Needless to say, I now have a different dentist.

As always, check with a doctor about any medical concerns, but that was the situation in my case.

Hi Dan...

My dad had an artificial heart valve and a pace maker. His cardiologist had him take antibiotics before dental work. Also the cardio I saw told me that if my heart murmur was worse than it currently is that he would suggest I take it too. Just a dose before the actual work.

My neurosurgeon and dentist both agree with taking antibiotics before any substantial dental work, but not for something as minimal as a cleaning or a simple filling.

Hmmm......I've taken an antibiotic after major dental surgery, but that was long before my fusion. No one's mentioned a word to me about it, especially in advance of a procedure.

Up untill just recently ( in the last year) I used to have to take antibiotics for all my dental work and annual colonoscopy any and every thing because of Mitral Valve Prolapse but now they don't do that any more!

I have to. I had a fusion and the revision, and my dentist and my physiatrist insist that I take a loading dose of antibiotics before any cleaning or dental work at all.......period.
It's a bit frustrating, but I understand the dentists concerns and those of my physiatrist.

I have had several fusions and one with hardware. My neurosurgeon advised me to take the antibiotics before any INVASIVE dental procedure such as work below the gum line and root canal. But only for 2 -3 months following the fusion surgery. He was concerned about introducing bacteria into the blood stream which could possibly settle in the healing area. I think the key words were INVASIVE dental and 2-3 MONTHS AFTER surgery. He also recommended postponing any scheduled dental work until after the surgery.

Maybe it depends on what is foreign and what isnt? I have a knee replacement and have not ever been told anything like that.

I could see if maybe it was something internal like heart and valves,stents etc.

The only problems I have encountered is getting thru security at the court house without setting off the alarms.

my daughter has a heart condition and has wires in her chest due to having had open
heart surgery and always has to be pre med with antibotics for all dental work...
the pre med antibotics are to prevent endocardistis...
