Tramadol or Ultram

Welcome to the chronic pain forum of Healing Well. It's so rare to be able to give a quick answer; they are the same drug, but ultram is the "brand" name of tramadol. Tramadol is the name of the drug. The only difference would be if you got a generic version, and most of those aren't substantially different, yet that can vary.

I just wrote you a long reply and for some reason it didn't recognize my name and password.

I just wanted to say that just in case you didn't know it, yes, ultram and tramadol are the same and they are addictive.

The are listed as non narcotic but in some states they are switching it.

It is vey much addictive. I was on it for a few years. I tolerated it very well, though it wasn't very strong, I didn't crash on it like percocet. Also, when you look up drug interactions. It says a big no with anti depressants. The funny thing, just the other day (and I heard it before) that it was very rare to have a problem with combining the 2. I heard it from my pharmacist.

There is another site that someone wrote a journal of the evils of the drug. Where she got the info, I don't know. My husband got off of it easily, I had a little trouble but she basically said, it was impossible and banned me. ( I have to laugh at that one)

I don't know what else to say. I just got finished telling someone that I needed to give back more b/c this board is filled with the most compassionate people and great moderators.

Ultram/tramadol affects your serotonin levels so if you take it with SSRI's you are at increased risk for serotonin syndrome. It's not a common reaction but it can be fatal so if you take both, you should know the symptoms.

You should also stay away from St. John's Wort and 5-HTP when taking tramadol since they also affect serotonin levels.

I take tramadol for about 2 weeks out of each month and really, really crave it for a few days when I stop. I feel like I am getting the flu, my stomach bothers me, and I get irritable.

I've talked to about a dozen people that have taken tramadol. Some people get a "high" from it and some don't. Those that get the high feeling seem to have a harder time with withdrawal symptoms.
