shoulder pain and 1st trip to pm

smilewinkgrin  Today I met with my pm for the first time and he sat and talked to me about my pain for 45 minutes he is trying me on oxycodone ,lyrica and a lidocaine patch.He actually took the time to hear my concerns and what was wrong with me.Tonight i took one oxycodone a lyrica and have the patch on and i feel better than i have in years.Is there anything i should watch for or  be aware of because i have never used or heard of oxycodone,lyrica,or a lidocaine patch?

Hello and nice to meet you, there are lots of nice people here...
As the weather starts getting warmer, it can effect the medication in the
lidocaine patch and it can get absorbed quicker into your body with the heat
when it heats up here in Texas the patch makes me very very sick, so becareful
with the patch..plus the patch can be tricky to stay on..
Lyrica made me throw up, but I hope it works for you and I've not been on Oxycodone
yet so no way for me to explain about that medicine..
try a google search on all these meds to find out what the side effects might be..
Some times I see my PM Doctor once a month and other times every other month,
a good pain management psychologist can help and you might want to consider this.

Welcome to the CP forum. We are a close family of folks all sharing the plague of chronic pain in one form or another. I hope through our experiences we can offer some experience that will help answer your questions and provide an avenue to complain, vent, rage, show disappointment, and, hopefully, share the elation of success... even a partial success.

I am currently on the lidoderm patch and oxycodone (30 mg. IR). I have had no problems with the patch although it really does not penetrate very deeply into the tissue. It is effective in reducing pain from muscle spasms and strains. Oxycodone is a systemic narcotic which is frequently used as the pain med of last resort meaning it will generally provide pain relief when others have failed. But it is not without side effects. It is wonderfully effective for me in relieving moderate to severe back pain from 4 fusions. Like all narcotics, the body will develop a tolerance to the med and you wil, over tiem, require increasingly higher does for the same pain relief. DO NOT mix alcohol with any narcotic pain med and particularly not with oxycodone. Both alcohol and narcotics tend to suppress breathing. Taken together the results are highly unpredictable and could lead to coma or death. So be aware of that. Everybody reacts differently to these meds. Oxycodone may reduce or slow down mental functioning. It may seem like you are in a bit of a fog on the med. It may slow reaction time so driving and operating machinery could be problems. I have noticed that oxycodone alters my mood and reduces my tolerance or everyday annoyances. Makes you crabby. Just some things you may or may not experience. I am glad to hear that you are feeling much better on the medication. That's the whole idea. Improve the quality of life and functioning. Better living through chemistry, as the folks at Dupont used to say in their ads.

Welcome to the chronic pain forum of Healing Well. It's late and I don't have much energy left, but mainly I would say to you that we all react to medications differently, so try not to be scared off by one person's bad experience. You might want to keep a little journal of your pain and how your symptoms are affected by each medication. And communicate with your doctor if you have any side effects you're concerned about, or you don't think the medication is helping. Often doctors will start us at the lowest dose, but that may not be enough for some people. I've had that trouble with lyrica. Best way to research each medication is go directly to the manufacturer's website. But it's good that you're already getting some relief. That's a good sign.

There is no medication without some side effects, but we all have to balance that with quality of life - for most of us, it's trying to get some back. Yes, your body does become dependent on medications such as oxycodone, but you may not necessarily need to keep increasing doses due to tolerance. Some people stay at the same dose for a very long time. And this does not mean you are an addict. There is a difference between our body's becoming dependent on a medication and becoming an addict, although far too many people don't realize it.

This is a great support group and I'm glad you've joined us. We're not doctors, though, and can't give medical advice. But there's no place better to come when you need others who understand.

   Welcome! Im very glad to meet you. I dont know too much about the medications you listed? But the patches? My mother in law uses them and she just LOVES them. She is a fiesty and busy one for sure. With those patches she can even clean her pool without pain. She says just a lil soreness, nothing big. Small blessing, take them any which way they come! And here I go rambling...

To All: Thanks for the support and I do not have any experience so I probably will not add much to your website,but  I hope to glean as much info as I can so my family is not so scared that I am becoming an addict or becoming "hooked".My PM said he has addicts as patients because without what he does they would lead a horribly painful life and if he can help them that is what he is called to do.
