hey all;

          My feet and ankles have been very swollen lately and I was just wondering if the meds I take can be causing this, I take 30mg Roxycodone 8 times a day and I also take 5mg Oxycodone 8 times a day for breakthrough pain. If these meds are the cause what can I do to counteract this effect.

Sam if I were you I would be calling my PCP tomorrow morning. I swell all the time but mine usually tells me my CHF is acting up. I don't know if pain medications can cause you to swell but just in case call your PCP. We don't want you getting to sick...

i would definatly call ur doctor, even ur general if the one who perscribed those meds cannot see or talk to u... is it both of ur feet? calves? i can tell u i was on a higher dose of oxycodone and never had that problem, but again everyone reacts different... but my step father has his one foot, ankle and calf swollen for days and it turned out he had a blood clot, so when i hear swollen feet, i get worried, but if its both ur feet its very, very unlikely to be a clot, but i wanted to let u know so u can go get it checked out! oh, and i wanted to ask is it constant, or does it go up and down through out the day?

Mine tend to do that from Lyrica or after I have been sitting for too long. I have a total foot drop in one foot and a partial foot drop in the other, so I can't do any of those ankle pull ups unless I put a towel under my feet and pull them up manually, but if you can pull up your ankles on your own, sitting in a chair, pull up and hold your foot for a few seconds as many times as you can, and then repeat several times a day. It does help to reduce the swelling.
Are you having any calf pain? Any hotness in the areas? If you are, then you should call your Primary doctor and get it checked out. We all have to watch out for blood clots from sitting or standing in one place too long, especially if we have difficulty walking or standing for long.

I agree with everyone but also with Nerve Damage and medication combinations esp. Neurontin or Lyrica I've been told Lymphaedema is a common side effect.  Hope thats not what it is Sam because it is a frustrating, miserable condition.  I developed it from a reaction to Lyrica along with some other side effects that did go away but the LymphE became permanent sad

Sam everyone had given you some great tips. I for one have it as well, and yes, medications can cause swelling. When my pain pump was implanted my increases were only half of a normal one due to the swelling problem. You are on your feet alot I know being a chef. There are many things that can contribute to your situation. But as they all say, best thing to do is see your PCP. If you are retaining fluid they can put you on a diurectic to help get the fluid off.

Sam when I to take Lyrica my feet swell and they told me to put my feet up and that it could take a few days for the swelling to go down see your Doctor of health person and be looked at they think mine was my blood pressure which is all over the place because of the meds I take. Mixing medications can cause peoblems too my Doctor is always checking to see if the mix of medications could cause some side effets too.

Hi Sam.

 

  When my leggs hurt I wrapp them in hot wet towels. I rarly get the oppertunity to sit thou.. Hope you can get  into the doc soon..

Hey everyone;

                      I just wanted to say thanks for all of your advise and I am going to call my doctor first thing in the morning, and to answer some of your questions yes it is both feet, ankles and calves and it has me very concerned because this has been going on for about 9 days and it is showing no signs of letting up plus it is painful to stand after I have been resting for awhile and when I wake up in the morning and stand up it is extremely painful, and no I do not take any other medicine other than my pain medicine so as soon as I have some information as to what is causing this I will let you guy's know.

Hey Sam, I know the pain you are talking about. It has been so long since I have seen my ankles till its pathetic. Of course along with the swelling of the lower legs and feet is my legs are really red all of the time. They look sunburned year round. When I do get some of the fluid off of them and the swelling down somewhat they are so painfull to stand on. Yep, you need t talk to your dr. Good luck, Susie

Hey there Sam,

    Elevating the feet and legs is the first step - try to sleep with them higher than your heart by stacking a couple of pillows at the end of your bed. Also try elevating them any way you can during the day - even a little bit is better than none at all. Also go to your nearest Whole Foods or health food store and buy some dandelion tea - it's great for reducing the swelling. Of course, some might still remain, but these things do help. I'm new on Lyrica too. I get swollen feet and hands. Plus, whether I've taken it or not, I notice that when I have to walk, I get sharp pain in the arch of my foot...that travels up my legs. Same with if I put my hands down too. Not sure if its related to the Lyrica but its something to consider.

Sam, I also remember that you run a resturant and are on your feet for way too long every day! Could be thats all it is causing your problem but like everyone said, best to get it checked out. Let us know how you make out w/ the Doc tomorrow!

Did you hear from the doctor yet? I was wondering if you were having redness with your leg swelling. Cellulitis, an infection under the skin on the legs can cause swelling and redness of the ankles and legs. Straydog have your doctors ever checked you out for this? I had a client while doing home health that needed antibiotics due to cellulitis in her legs. Her legs were swollen and the skin would get bright red. Just curious.
