Is anyone taking Amrix for Muscle Spasms?  I fell a month ago, the left leg gives out when I least expect it and down I went.  Caused a whiplash injury (on top of the usual pain from triple fusion), bruised the tailbone and have been having low back pain along with flare of nerve pain in the legs (which was under control) grrrrr!  I've done some alternative treatments that have helped the neck and legs but the low back is not cooperating.  Went to my PM today and he gave me samples of Amrix for 10 days.

Just want to know if it has helped anyone!!

I've been taking Amrix (15mg capsules) as needed for about 4 months, for pyriformis muscle spasms. It's the same drug as Flexeril, but it's an extended release formulation. Like most medications, it's got it's pros and it's cons as far as I'm concerned. On the "pro" side: it's done a really good job of knocking my spasms out in pretty short order and it really does last 24 hours on just one pill. On the "con" side: unlike most of my other drugs, I notice the Amrix after I take it and it turns me into 3 of the dwarfs that got cut from Snow White - Sloshy, Gorky, and Foggy.

When my doctor first recommended it, what started out as a spasm had turned into a "locked" muscle that was wrenching down on my sciatic nerve. I took one 15mg capsule a day for 4 days in a row, and then I was fine. Since that time, I've only taken it for a day or two at a time, when I feel the muscle twinges starting, and it settles things back down before it gets really bad - sort of an "ounce of prevention" approach. If I had to take it every day, I would probably be looking for something else because I doubt I could tolerate the sloshiness on a long-term daily basis. But just taking it as I need it has been working great and is a good balance for me.

Interesting - I'd never heard of flexeril in ER. But I don't know about turning into those dwarfs! ROFL! I think I have my own version but they haven't got names yet!

Patti - I'd be curious to hear what your experience is. Do you become Sloshy, Gorky or Foggy - or all 3?? LOL

Thanks for the info Bionic...its my understanding its not a long term use drug...PA I'll let you know if I dwarf out lol.  He told me to take it at bedtime, so I'm hoping I'm functional tomorrow!!

Ok that was so funny!!!!  Sloshy, Gorky and Foggy.  Ok I have taken flexeril, and it did nothing for me.  I do take baclofen as needed and I LOVE it.  Unfortunately it does not have an extended release.  You have to take it 2 or 3 times a day.  When I take it long term, three days or more, then I have no side effects.  However, the first time I take it, it can make me pretty drowsy. 

I have MS spasticity in my neck and upper back, and in my left knee/leg.  My spasticity is actually causing a cervical vertebra to bulge.  The baclofen helps that so much.

I think we should all start using the phrase "dwarf out" with our doctors to describe side effects that fall in the dwarfish categories of Sloshy, Gorky, Foggy, Dopey, and Sleepy. tongue

Oh the thought of all those fabulous side effects out there. Foggy head dwarf is one I experience on some of my RA medication!!! So I can totally relate. Really hope it works for you EDT, golitho

Okay everybody, I woke up feeling foggy, dopey and sleepy....the spasm is the same!  Will keep you posted, if I turn into the sloshy gorky 5'8" dwarf later I'll let you know lol.

What if we create a new pain scale based on the dwarf model? :-)

Level 1 would obviously be "Happy".

Okay PALady on the dwarf scale I'm a 5 today....not bad!  I do believe this med is working on the spasm......ahhhhh relief!

I am glad that med is working for you! Flexeril never did anything for me except make me "Dopey" The military used to give me Robaxin for muscle spasms and that worked pretty good but you had to be on it for awhile before it started working. I got that mostly for back spasms.

Baclofen has been the Godsend for me! I am on 25mg every 8 hours except my night time dose at 10Pm and then I take 30mg of it. I take that 24/7 and have been on it for several years, even though I am on it 24/7, every now and then I will have periods that I will have bouts of severe muscle spasms, I get them in my Legs,( calf's and thighs, especially the inner thighs, boy that can be a real BEAR!) feet, back, the neck is pure torture for me! and arms, and hands! I don't think that there is any place on my body that they don't strike! To me there is very few things as painful as when a muscle knots up tight and will not release! To be woken up in the middle of the night from a very sound sleep with them has to be the very worst! I absolutely hate them!

I do sympathize and empathize with you Patti, I sure do hope that the Amrix works for you!

Patti, I can just imagine you going into the doctor and using the dwarf pain scale. Know people like us we can't just be one but would have to be a combination. You can tell them you are at a Sloshgorkggy with a touch of sleepdopey. That would make it very clear to them. I am glad to hear that you are starting to get some relief. This has been going on for awhile. Have a blessed day!

The spasm in the low back is better tonight....but has moved up to the mid back....not sure which is worse but could just SCREAM!!

So I'm spazzy dwarf tonight!

It's kind of funny that Flexeril never did anything worthwhile for me either, but the Amrix does. When I went to the doctor with that initial muscle spasm/locked muscle issue, I had requested Robaxin, because I'd had success with it a few years earlier when Flexeril had failed.

My doctor gave me a shove toward the Amrix and I agreed to try it, but told him if it didn't work, he had to get on his knees and apologize for not listening to me. I totally hated having to tell him he was right about the Amrix.. I was sort of hoping it wouldn't work, just to see him on his knees.. tongue

I am sure that at some point we will have someone who is afraid of dwarfs and will suffer from dwarfaphobia and we will have to a plan b as we would not want to leave anyone out.

I have not ever heard of Amrix till now. Not sure it would work for me, never know though. Flexeril caused me the major heaves and made me a foggy dwarf. I too used Robaxin in the past with success. However, the last few years, Zanaflex has really been a life saver for me. it works and does not knock me out. But, my new pain mgt wuit rxing it to her patients because she said they had started a black box warning back in the spring of 07. Well, I looked it up and they did not black box it at all. They sent a warning letter out to drs that is could possibly interact with about 5 other medications resulting in the mix could make the drug work like a heavier dose had been tkaen. I plan to print this out & give it to her at my appt this month. When I asked in June for a script she said no-then told me why. Then she decided to go ahead and write the script because I use the PRN, and they really work for me. But she only wrote the rx for 40 pills.. better than nothing tho.

I would make a good dwarf in fact osteporosis is helping me become a dwarf by shrinking me.

When I talked with my doc this week, he told me that I should go out into the middle of the woods & just scream! He knows that I am way too uptight & have a very hard time showing & acting upon my emotions, which is especially hard on me due to recent events, so he told me the story of how they used to take all these uptight, high-level corporate people into the woods so that they could scream. I think he called it "primal scream therapy!" smhair Maybe we ought to try it?!

Drums, screaming in the woods, there is hope that my new doctor with the chicken feet around his neck will show up. That bone through the nose must hurt.
