15 yr olds broken thumb

cry  ok everyone I gotta post that my 15 yr old son broke his thumb in football practice two days ago.  This morning we went to orthopedic doc and I had a choice.  Make him sit on the sidelines for 6 weeks and listen to him whine or go in every week and have a new cast put on and let him practice with the team.  I agreed to all the casts as long as he has no contact hitting for 10 days.  The bone that broke was a growth plate so we have to be somewhat careful with it.  In 10 days after another cast is put on and new x-rays we will let him tackle as long as he has extra padding wrapped around his hand and arm.  They triple strengthed the cast so he could practice.

 

Now regarding the pain.  As we all know with CP that it sucks smhair    My hubby took him to the doctor the first day it was broke I was a work.  While they were their my son said it don't hurt.  So my hubby said we'll call if we need pain meds...  Ok hubby forgot to tell me that when I got home and he went to work.  Hes forgets that he forgets with his fibro I think.  So lets says its 6 pm lastnight and my son can't stand the pain.  Office is closed.  AM I THE ONLY THINKING PERSON IN THIS HOUSE?????  Ok we made it through the night.  Ortho this morning was shocked the PCP didn't just write the dang script.....

 

Ok now he took his pain meds today but he feels really good now no pain..  hmmm wonder why.  Now he doesn't want to take the meds cuz he feels good.  But the doctor point blank said don't let the pain back up.  My son is convinced its a miracle..  PAIN GONE  ok so I can't make him take his meds but when he wakes me up at 1 am crying I hope he learns his lesson. nono

 

So I learned one thing today......  Its just not MEN who are stubborn its also the young boys!!!!!  No offense to all the guys out there... turn

Laurie, I resemble that remark. Men are not stuborn, not stuborn, not stuborn, not stuborn.... Ok maybe just a little. I hope your son gives into his wise and caring mother. Don't be too hard on your hubby, at least he took him to the Dr. and did not try and put a cast on by himself. And he did not say, just man up and live with it. See there are some positive side to what we men do or don't do. Blessings on your son. I am glad it is not more serious but I am probably with you on trying to protect it at this point. Have a great evening.

He will always give into me.  He owes me bigtime letting him continue to practice.  I have leverage now yeah

I love my hubby so much bless his heart  skull    He tried to tell me if it didnt hurt to much he wouldn't take him to the doctor.  I said YOU WILL GO do not collect 200 just staight to PCP office. skull

If he would of been home lastnight.  (he was filling in for the night supervisor) he might of said man up.... turn    He was whining......lol  At the beginning of our chatroom.

Yes there are some positive sides to men they do know how to use power tools.  I take that back smhair    My dad was using a power tool to remove a stump in our yard last year.  He rigged it with a different blade.  It bucked back and he sawed his leg off.  NO JOKE it was just hanging there at the ankle eyes    So one year later and a steel rod he is now NOT ALLOWED to use power tools.

Laurie, I am sorry to hear about you son breaking his finger...It sounds painful. So he took one pain pill and he is not hurting anymore? Wow, he is tough. I do think he should be taking them as directed to ward off the pain. And you are right, he will probably wake you up in the middle of the night hurting, throbbing and begging for one. You know this. I don't know why men/boys are so stubborn, in general. Sorry, we have some great men here on the forum. Now, I certainly didn't mean offense to anyone. Please forgive that remark. But in all honesty, we all know this for being the truth. I do hope that he does heal quickly. And I hope the pain isn't too bad for much longer. Let us know how he is doing.

Thank you Anice for your kind words.  He will do just fine hes just a character.... yeah    He will take his meds as prescribed so the pain doesn't backup on him and we are all up all night long cuz he was being a butthead.

The doctor said if the pills are to strong to just break them in half.  Hes never taken pain meds before so we are taking it very seriously.  Lortabs we have been breaking cuz the first half he took he went straight to sllep.  Making up for the loss lastnight when he was uncomfortable.

As always when you hurt something you will start bumping and banging it... smilewinkgrin    The cat is driving him insane.  I think she likes the smell..... smhair    Sweat

I don't know whether to laugh or cry after reading all these comments!

Somehow after your last post I had the image of you opening your son's mouth and feeding him the pill kind of like you'd do with a dog! shocked smilewinkgrin
Or maybe tuck in his favorite bedtime treat! tongue At least you can sleep through the night!

It took a few minutes of talking to him.  Found out he doesnt like taking any meds.  He says they are hard to swallow.  My gosh I broke the pill in half its not that big...lol  He should try to swallow an amoxasilline  (sp sucks).  They are horse pills.

But hes sound asleep now hopefully he will sleep through the night. eyes

P.S.  Sneaking it into a snack how funny I give my dog meds in snacks everynight..lol  Force feeding him a pill  hmmm I would have to plug his nose in the process.. yeah

On the plus side, it's a good thing he doens't like taking pills, considering the downside of that. Maybe it's just learning that they have their place - when prescribed - but that he's right to be leary of them in any other situation.

Probably as an athlete, too, he doesn't want to put junk in his body. Well, I don't know if that applies to french fries and burgers!

How's he doing today? And how are you doing?

Hes doing fine today still alittle troubled about taking his pain meds.  My husband a I sat him down and told him the reason he feels fine is because of the pain medication.  And if he went a period of time without it he would REALLY feel the pain.  He understands now.

You are so right he is against taking medication for he sees me taking it.  With being so INTO sports he believes the saying No pain No gain.  Its his bragging rights that when he broke it he knew, told the couch and didn't flinch when the trainer moved it around.  He says hes a man now.  He even went back on the field and continued practice until the trainer demanded he get off the field.

His down fall is Ice Cream he loves his Rocky Road.  yeah

I'm fine today other than the extra pain at night I have been going through.  Still don't know if its normal or if I need to see the Urologist or Nepherologist.  I guess I'm playing it by ear for the moment.

How are you feeling today, your mouth getting any better????

You are a good doting mother, than is caring for her boy! He is lucky and I bet he knows it too! Don't kid yourself we might be stuborn and act the manly man stuff, but deep down, we all have the little kid in us that wants to be babied! It is just a manly man secret! As if you women didn't already know that!

My nephews are like that. Don't wanna take medicine. Same with their dad. Hell, who DOES? Do they think anyone likes to swallow these meds? Still...I can picture someone feeding them meds through pudding...hehe. "Now swallow....swallow....swallow...SWALLOW DERN IT!"
