I have posted about this a few times before but I always stray off topic and all the replies seem to go that way instead of towards this issue.

I am looking to get a new Dr. My old Dr. is just not working out, period.

What is the procedure for this kind of thing? Do I tell me current Dr. (whom I do not trust) that I want a new Dr. and hope he will continue to refill my prescriptions while I look for one? What if he doesn't refill them? Do I go to a new Dr. and just tell them everything and see what they say? What do I do? If my current Dr. cuts off my medications I will have some serious issues. I do not think I can take going through that. What do I do?

I would not bother informing your current doctor of anything until you find a new one. They may charge you for them, but I would request a copy of your medical records from your current doctor so you can take them with you to the 1st appointment(s) with the candidates for your new MD. If your current doctor wants to know why you want them just say for your own personal use.

I'm w/ Jim on this one! It's exactly what I've done many times when switching doc's for one reason or another. I'm sure you will not have a problem!

I'm trying to find a new doc myself. I would not tell your old one anything. He doesn't need to know. You can also tell him that you are upset with the way he is handling you care.(if you want). Just make sure to take with the new doc's nurse and see what he or she is like and if they will accept you with ALL of you health issues.

When I left my PM to return to the care of my PCP, I lined things up with the PCP first. Afterward, I cancelled my next PM appointment (I just the receptionist that I couldn't make it & wasn't going to schedule another appointment at this time) & sent my PM a very polite letter in the mail, saying that Dr. such & such was taking over my pain management & thanking him for his services (even though I didn't like the guy) & that if I was ever in need of his services or expertise in the future, I or my doctor wouldn't hesitate to call upon him. And that was it. My letter was signed, dated, and sent & from that date on, I considered my pain contract with the PM void.

Best of luck finding a new doctor.

You've been given some good advice already. Not sure I have much to add. The advice about getting your records is good, because then you can see what's been written, and be prepared to respond to anything negative with a new doctor.

I'm presuming this is your PM doc. Sometimes they have office policies about taking a patient from another doctor, although IMHO this shouldn't happen as long as your intent is only to go to one doctor. I agree I wouldn't tell your doctor right now.

I'm in the process of getting a second opinion just for my root canal, and when I called the 3 local endodontists one would not do second opinions or consults. His receptionist said he doesn't get involved between me and my dentist who did the original work. Fortunately, the other two will do it, but of course they charge. And either I have to tell my dentist to get a copy of the current x-ray, or pay $20 extra to have the consulting doc do his own, and I'll likely try to do that as my dentist then wouldn't know anything about it. I don't want to irritate someone who may be drilling in my mouth! Just like you don't want to risk being without meds.

I think that until you actually have a new Dr. I would keep it to yourself.... It may take months to get in to see one and your current Dr. may decide to stop giving you your meds out of spite...I hope not, but why take that chance?

As long as your appts. don't overlap each other you aren't doing anything wrong....so happy hunting...
