My doc has been after me to replace my pump morphine with Priault. Anyone out there with any comments, suggestions, or warnings for me would be in my debt. I have been in severe pain for so long, I sleep every 36 hours so I will be so tired I can go right to sleep. I am having reservations about changing, but my doc keeps up the pressure. Should I switch? Is it worth it? Thanks!! By the way, I'm brand new on the site, so if I screw up, sorry! turn

Welcome to the Chronic Pain forum of Healing Well. This is a great place for support and for people to share their experiences, although we aren't here to give medical advice.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the medication you mention, and the only thing I know about pumps is what I've read here. It seems like someone has asked about this medication recently, but I can't remember on which thread. Hopefully someone else will come along and identify it for you.

In the meantime, you may want to use the search box and look for past threads on the topic.

Don't worry about screwing up! There are lots of people here to help, so just ask if you're not sure. We have several great moderators, and the Help menu is useful. It's also a good idea to read the forum rules.

There is another thread about Prialt. I think if you search on Prialt you will find some information. I have an intrathecal pump my PM doctor recommended Prialt for me in addition to Baclofen. That drug was nothing but a nightmare for me. It had a block box warning for side effects. One of the major side effects that I experienced was psychosis. I literally thought I was being poisoned by my pump and the only way to stop it was to cut it out. I also had an INCREASE in pain with Prialt. A website that I highly recommend for individuals with pumps is a yahoo group called Pumpsters. The entire group has pumps and there is a wealth of information about medications for pumps, including Prialt. You have to request to join pumpsters and it will take a couple of days for them to accept your request. Once approve they have a great resource of files and databases with pump infomation in them. Also send a message about Prialt and see what responses you get. Google Yahoo and Pumpster and you will get the address.

Good luck. Prialt was the worse medication that I have ever taken in my life.

I have not tried the Priault myself, but to be totally honest, I have only heard bad things about it. It scares the bejeebers out of me. My PM feels that it should be taken back off the market!

I am a c-4,c-5 complete quadripledgic, 8th year now. Due to an automobile wreck. I have been on several medications since then, including Methadone, 30 mg. daily. My pain dr. wanted me to try Priault two years ago for nerve pain, that I suffer greatly from.
Complications with uninary problems delayed the surgery for the implanted pump, until Sept. of this year. I now am getting baclofen along with priault through the intrathical pump. The dr. started me on a very low dose of Priault and is going up very slowly by-weekly, until I reach an acceptable level of pain. I have experienced a dramatic drop of pain level. And think it is going to be a very good alternarive to all the oral meds that I have been on for years now. I am starting to withdraw from Methadone, and have experienced some BAD side effects, which have seen confusing with the effects of Priault. He lowered the dose of Priault, but have come to the conclusion it is the Methadone not the Priault. I am starting to feel better about my side effects, after reading other forums on methadone withdrawal symptoms. I am definately going to give Priault a continuing chance to relieve my nerve pain.

I also have read nothing but nightmarish stories about Prialt. It's a scary medication, and I have read about little success for patients who have used it. I also would highly recommend Pumpsters on Yahoo. There are many there who have tried it and it is not a highly regarded medication in the pump world from what I have seen.

Hi Chair-Man and welcome to Healing Wells chronic pain forum. I see that you have picked up on an old thread here at the forum concerning Prialt. I too have a pump and my dr will not use it in pumps and feels it should be taken off the market because of the side effects. I am thinking we had a member here that had it in her pump a very short while and it nearly killed her, it was really, really bad.I have personally have read nothing but negative things about it.. I have heard from others that it is a booger trying to wean off of Methadone and know of a few that were unable to. I do hope that you are able to even on the low dose you are on. Any reason in particular the dr didn't try to get you off Methadone before implanting your pump? If you would please start your own introduction thread so that everyone on board here can give you a proper welcome, with this being such an old post many will over look it.

Prialt is a scary, SCARY substance that is really only meant for very rare and extreme cases where other options are more or less completely unsuccessful at treating extremely severe pain.

The horrifying side effects have been described above, so I won't rehash them.

To be blunt, it seems very likely that your doctor wants you to switch because it would allow him to reduce his narcotic prescribing; in short, because it's a good thing for *him* -- not because it's likely to be a good thing for you.

Prialt, is, in my humble opinion, the king of all "cop-out drugs." I'm sure there are a handful of people for whom the mortifying risks are worth it to obtain relief and who have no better options....but I've virtually never heard of anyone who's tried it that *didn't* experience awful side effects which were completely not worth it.
