Morphine and Insomnia

 Hi, my Doctor has just changed my morphine from liquid [oramorph] to tablets which I have to take twice a day. Since taking these tablets I have suffered from dreadful insomnia - previously pain would keep me awake - and I don't know what to do. I've tried, reading, watching TV, drinking warm drinks in fact anything that might help me sleep but nothing is helping. Has anyone else suffered from morphine induced insomnia? If so, is this normal? How long does it last? Finally, any ideas what I can do to get some sleep?

Sleep problems are a fairly common side effect with morphine in any form. With some people it knocks them out and other people it is like taking IV caffeine...LOL.

I really doubt there is much you can do on your own to help this and I would advise taking any OTC sleep aids due to possible drug interactions. Your best course of action is to contact your doctor and discuss this with him/her.

That is tough , I guess you changed the form of your medication for convience ? that pills are easier than liquid ? You don't say why your taking the morphine either.Generally theres usually something to deal with when you change even the form of your meds .I must agree with Jim that telling the doctor is probably the best course . I wish I could offer you something more substantial .

I am so sorry that you are not sleeping on the morphine, but in time you will be able to. You will probably nod out in the evenings. My first husband had to take it for cancer and he hated it because that was all he did was sleep. Though he was on a much higher dose than you are.

I hope taht you get some rest soon.

 Thanks guys for all of your advice.

I suffer from extensive neuropathy, fibromyalgia, depression and I have to use a cane to walk. The pain can get so bad that I can hardly move. As well as Morphine I also take anti-convulsants to help control the amount of pain I'm suffering.

MikeL99 you are right it is for convenience that I've changed to tablets and also the Doctor thought that it would be better to have a constant amount of morphine in my system to help cope with the pain. It's probably just teething problems and once I'm back to work [very soon] that will hopefully, help me sleep too.

When  I was on morphine it gave me insomnia . If this is bothersome I would ask the dr for a different pain med or get something to help with your insomnia.Good Luck.

You should check this post it has a bad typing error, says "I would advise taking any OTC sleep aids"
I know you meant to say I wouldn't advise, but if read quickly it could be taken the wrong way.

Wow.I was prescribed 180 mg of Morphine a day before my Total Knee Replacement.It made me take naps.I was very relaxed.

Maybe some Phenergan at night might get you to sleep.Demeral and Phenergan was a Meprigan.

I take Hydrocodone now and I get 120 Phenergan a month.

Hope things get right.Has it always affected you this way?
