Hi Everyone. I won't be able to be online today, but I am pretty sure that I threw up my medicine. Well, I threw up about
twenty minutes after I took it.
It's really strange because sometimes I have trouble swallowing. I am sure that it is not from allergies, because I know all too well what it feels like for my throat to swell.
I threw up because my coffee didn't go down the right tube. Lately, when I take a sip of water, etc., it will not go down the right tube and then I cough like crazy. This time I threw up though.
This happens maybe 5 times a week or so. Is this normal?
Back to my medicine. I don't know what you're supposed to do when you think that you might have thrown it up. I would love advice so that I will know what to do if this ever happens again.
Thanks,
Flower

Hi Flower,
I hope you are doing better by this time a little over an hour after you posted. First of all, have you had your tongue checked for the vomiting? Sounds weird huh? Well I need to back up and say this, I am NOT a doctor!! Nothing can replace your doctor's knowledge. At any rate, the thing I'm wondering is if you've developed dysphasia in your mouth or tongue which is a technical term for the muscles in your tongue or in your mounth not working. My "baby" girl now 11 (geez where does the time go??) kept choking when she was a baby and would end up in the hospital with pneumonia because fluid went down the wrong pipe! It's called aspirating when that happens. The fluid that goes into your lungs doesn't just choke you, in my daughter's case, she would get pneumonia. I'd have it checked out. What I had to do for my child was to use rubbber tools and train her tongue. Also, this is probably silly, but check your meds out and see if any of them cause your muscles to act up. A med called Reglan is being sued and one of the reasons is that it causes uncontroled mouth and tongue movement.
about
your meds, you probably absorbed the better part of them so, I personally would NOT take another dose! Better safe than sorry and you will be taking meds later anyway. Just sit back, relax and enjoy that cup of joe which I just decided I think I'll go make it sounds so good! I usually wait till the hubby wakes and then he makes it.....way too strong! Which is why he's the coffee maker!
Take Care,

Dear flower I'm sorry your having trouble keeping stuff down . Have you tried taking one pill at a time , and slowly ? Theres no rush after all and do you take your med after eating ? Sometimes its more sootling to the body when you eaten first plus it can absorb the meds better .Good Luck Friend , Mikel

Flower,
I choke and end up throwing up quite a lot myself. I think I have been himliched more then anyone else on the planet!! No one seems to know why I chock on things so easily but I guess its just my lot in life. As for the meds, you are mostly good I do believe but if you get any really bad pain spikes you normally do not get a call to your doc may be in order.
I hope your feeling alright,
Sarrah

Hi Flower,
Hope you're feeling better now. I would suggest two things:
1. call your pharmacist and ask about
whether you should take any more medicine or wait until the next dose. They are often more "in the know" than your doctor when it comes to drugs.
2. Talk to your doctor about
the swallowing problem. It could be a sign of GERD (gastric reflux disease). There are tests and treatments that could help.
Good luck and feel better soon!

Flower123, I know this may sound gross, but do you take your med in pill form or liquid? And do you throw up right away after taking it. I would think if it was in pill form and you threw up right a way you might see it. Silly question I know, but it is just a thought. Just trying to help, and mean no harm by the question. I'm a little nervous trying to help at this point, as I seem to do more harm than good these days. I do, like so many others here, hope you can find a solution to this problem soon, as I would think that the acid from your stomach might be doing some harm.
Please keep us updated on this, as I for one have never thought about
this problem and what may cause it. I'm sure this is of interest to so many others here as well. Thank you for bringing up the question here.

Thank you to everyone SO MUCH! I didn't take another dose. All of the information and support was amazing. I can't even express how much I appreciate everyone. Things for some reason have been much harder for me lately, and I've been meaning to make a post about
it. I will do that within the next few days.
I will definitely tell my doctor about
this.
Mikel, Kim, Chartreux,-thank you! What a blessing it is to have caring people give such wonderful support.
MsBunky-I think it would be a great idea (if this ever happens again) to call the pharmacist. I never thought of that!
Catz4-I will ask about
dysphasia ! That's so interesting that you could have to train your tongue! I wonder if this is the reason I've been having a chronic cough lately. I don't take Reglan. I used to have ummm... acid reflux. Is that similar to GERD? I'll look it up.
I'm just replying to everyone off of the top of my head so I'm sorry if I missed anything but I did read everything.
Screaming Eagle--I didn't look at my throw up, lol, but should have!
Eccorose-Isn't it terrible when something is wrong and they can't find out what it is? I wonder sometimes if in a hundred years docs are gonna say "wow...so THIS is why this person felt so awful"
THANK YOU A MILLION!
HUGS ,
Flower

I've noticed that for some reason, after vomiting up pain meds, I don't go into withdrawal as quickly as you might expect. I think this has something to do with those calming chemicals that the body releases after a vomiting episode. I've also noticed that my pain seems to be milder at that point, even without the meds on board. I keep meaning to research this phenomenon, but still haven't gotten around to it.

It only takes 7 seconds for anything to reach the stomach from the mouth. If you didn't throw up too soon after taking the pill you may have assorbed a decent amount.
