For those of you sick of paying $900 for a 3 month supply, good news:
A 300mg generic is on its way!
100mg and 200mg "generics" have been around for a few years, but were priced around $300-$400 for 90 pills.
Lupin Pharmaceuticals received FDA approval for all three doses about
2 weeks ago:

According to their website "Lupin will begin shipping its Tramadol ER shortly. "
If I recall, final FDA approval involves inspection of manufacturing facilities and sample products, so everything should be in place to begin production. My next refill is at the end of October, that may be too soon, but I'm hoping that they will be available by the end of the year.

Update:
I phoned the company today (9/14) and I was told that they will start shipping the product to pharmacies around the end of the month.

update:
To my great dismay and disappointment, the generic is going to be priced at an outrageous $800 for a 90 day supply! I asked about
it when I was at CVS today to pick up a different prescript
ion.
So, this "generic" will cost about
90% of the "brand" name price!!!

Do you find the ER version works as well or is as effective as taking the IR taken more often? I only get 50 mg three times a day and wake up at least once at night in pain and have to sit up while the 4th allowed pill takes effect. I was given the 100mg ER, but it didn't relieve pain very well at twice a day and there was no serotonin uplift I could detect like I get from the ER. Maybe it's the particular generic brand that doesn't work?

I haven't had the opportunity to compare the ER and the IR. If you look at the plasma concentrations over time of the active metabolite
(http://www.ultram-er.com/shared/pi/ultramer.pdf), it seems that the ER offers little benefit other than convenience. If it were up to me, I'd take the IR, but my PM seems to require that his patients take a time-release med before he's willing to also prescribe IR meds.
If the generic 100mg ER you've tried wasn't working for you, then you might want to try the new Lupin 100mg ER... or the branded med. The cost difference I don't think is that much.
Regarding the serotonin effect, I've for a long time suspected that my Ultram has been helping me with mood and energy. Back in 2007, when I started, I was not writing much and was quite down. By 2008, that all changed. However, I just can't say whether it was because of the serotonin release, the pain relief, or other non-medical factors. Since 2008, I've been EXTREMELY productive -- more so than even before the onset of my chronic pain.
At some point, maybe soon, I'll need to switch to a different daily pain med as I don't think the Ultram @ 300mg is providing adequate relief. I'll see then whether the Ultram has had something to do with my productivity.

These prices need to go down. Tramadol is a very good front line medicine in my experience, but people without insurance are going to have a hard time justifying hundreds of dollars when medicines like Vicodin is 7 bucks for a similar amount.
Sure one is extended acting and one is short acting, but those who are short on cash are getting a much worse standard of care because they can't avoid a potentially very helpful medicine.

I have been taking Tramadol 200mg ER for a little over three years for chronic low back pain. It works quite well for me.
I learned today that it is now a scheduleIV narcotic, and may be more difficult to get.
Have you experienced any trouble getting yours. Also the price went up. I used to find coupons for it, I'm wondering if those will still be available.
Just not sure where to find answers. Hoping this site will help.
Thanks.

Hello & welcome to the forum. Please note there appears to be some problems with this thread concerning the dates. Some are new & some are older.
We do ask all new members to post a separate intro post so that all members will see it & be able to give you a proper hello & welcome aboard. There has been some recent discussion about
Tramadol in the past week so you may want to look at those posts.
Thanks.
