question on sons up coming back surgery

I was wondering if anyone has had rods places to straighten spine. My son has socoleois and has to have this done. The Dr says pain will not last a long time and i pray he right. I just wanted to know if anyone has had this and what the aftermath was.

Hi Formyboy and welcome to the chronic pain forum. I am sorry to read that your son is in need of surgery but hopefully once the surgery is done it will make a huge difference in your son's life. I know a lady that her 16 yr old underwent surgery for scoliosis, she had to have the Harrington rods put in to straighten her spine. I met her daughter a couple of months after her surgery and this little gal was on cloud nine. She had suffered horrible pain because of the severe curvature, no surgery could be done until she was well past puberty and was on the downside of growing. She said the post op pain was no worse than what she had suffered for years. How old is your son? This little girl had looked forward to her surgery because she had suffered so much pain and it had been progressing over the years. Drs did not want her on pain medication either-so this child suffered a lot. She was so proud that she could stand up straight for the first time in her life, no more stares from kids her age because she couldn't stand straight. She was excited about going back to school so the kids could see the new her.

With any surgery there are going to be a few days that there is some pretty bad post -op pain. But the drs should try to keep that under decent control. Please let us know how your son's surgery comes out. Take care...Susie

Thank you much for your reply. My son is 14. He is very active and you wouldn't know anything was going on unless you knew to look at his chest. The only pain he really complains of is when he has to stand for awhile. I am as prepared as possible for the days following and know it will be hard with the pain for him. I am so glad to hear the girl you know going strong in a matter of months. That is big concern is if the pain will continue after a month or two. I know everyone handles pain differently but your post gives me a comparison and a positive outcome for this surgery. Thank you so much for your time and concern.

Annie, something I would like to share with you, is this, for some reason children react so differently when they undergo surgery than what we as adults do. I do not know if any of your children has ever had surgery of any kind or not, but when my daughter was 11 yrs old she had to have an emergency appendectomy, they had ruptured and they were not sure she would survive the next 24 hours. She was one sick little girl. But, by the fourth day she made a turn around and during all if this time and her recuperating time at home she never one time complained of surgical pain. I was scared and expecting the worst,. But these kids are resilent and they recover so much differently than adults do. I guess its the age difference, thats the only thing I can think of.

Mary's daughter was incredible in her recovery, like you she was terrified and worried her daughter would have this horrible pain and to her surprise she did wonderful and the drs never once let her suffer. This little gal said she felt like she was given a whole new life after surgery because she had been so limited.

first i am so sorry you and your daughter had to go through that but am elated she is alright He had to have two surgeries on his hand when he was less than a year old and did wonderful. I know it had to cause pain but at that age it was difficult to articulate. The Dr said same thing about the age and again i pray he is right. His surgery is early June just over a month and we are starting all the labs and stuff and we are all getting nervous. Your replies and concern have helped me to know that it is not just a Dr calming down mom. I truly appreciate your time, and for sharing your experiences thank you so much.
