CRPS with Osteoperosis and Gastro issues

Just reading some old threads and wondering what the relationship is between CRPS with Osteoperosis and gastro issues. I just recently had the mini pixie screening for osteoperosis and Am right on the border for failing so insurance wont pay for the full test. Even though I had a hip fracture all ready two years ago at 35 and have all the other issued. I feel like maybe I should appeal.

I also have been seen by a gastro dr for the last few months due to not being able to have bm's, even stuff like mag citrate and golytle doesnt work. The only way we were being successful was by using ememas and suppositories. When I went it wasnt considered constipation as nothing was hardened. It seems to be in waves, all the sudden a week ago things went back to normal after 4 months of significant issues. Wondering if this may be due to the CRPS. Drs around here seem clueless.

Any suggestions or resources?

Shell, have you taken steroids much in the past? This is what caused me to get osteoporosis at a younger age. Not sure what you are taking for pain, you know pain meds are the culprit for causing terrible constipation issues. I have not heard anything about CRPS causing any of these issues, let us know if you stumble across anything.

Hi Shell,

Although it's rare, it does seem that CRPS can involve the GI tract. This is certainly what my doctors believe is happening in my case - I have severe gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying) and intenstinal dysmotility. The constipation and needing to use enemas...yes, I know this one well...

I'm not really sure how/why there is GI involvement. I've spoken about this at length with my GI doctor in particular. Our best guess is that it's just because the CRPS affects the autonomic nervous system (I also have other systemic problems... especially with BP regulation) and that because of course the stomach and gut are under autonomic control they too can be affected...

My question to you would be - are you on any opioid medication? This will make any slowed transit time slower still.

The osteoporosis - again, it's certainly known as part of CRPS. I was diagnosed with it last year after fracturing eight vertebrae, though in my case it's probably partly nutritional - my gastroparesis was so bad at one time that my weight was down to 60lb and I was very lucky to survive. Other reasons? I'm not sure... But considering they don't the know the cause of CRPS it's maybe not sun a surprise :-(

As for meds I am on Fentynl and Oxycodone. I can go months without stomach issues then bamn, for months I am unable to go and require complete assistance. I do have very limited motility in my intestines that is concerning to the GI dr, this was dx'd by barium swallow, when they make you drink the dye and watch it travel. So in addition to the slow motility, i have the narcotics and the gastric bypass working all against one another.

I sure wish I had a dr that understood CRPS and what all can be involved. Maybe its not related at all, who knows. Laura, what kind of dr do you see primarly that is knowledgable enough to understand all the possibilities of CRPS?

I have pretty much had a falling out with my PM dr. The office staff has become very rude and they never return calls, forget to get scripts renewed, cancel appointments and just generally stink. They also failed to document some very important conversations and now blame it on me. I talked with my PCP and she has had the same problems with the office and has recommended a new PM dr. Since I am doing the SCS, I am opting to wait till after it is done to go to the new dr. The old office just got a new PA that is super nice and easy to talk to, maybe after a few months I may feel comfortable staying.

Susie, no not to much steroids for me. An occasional course when I would get pneumonia or bronchitis but thats it. I am concerned now because I have malabsorbtion due to the bypass that the bone density may get worse. So far all my vit levels are ok though. My GYN is starting me on a super low dose HRT, which makes me nervous but she said it should help.

Again, thank you all for the input. I think my best bet is to find a dr that is comfortable with dealing with everything.
