Foot / big toe swelling looks like its going 2 explode!!! Now have gout!!

 My foot/big toe started to swell Sat. and was getting worse. I was able to get a visit in with PCP today and told me I had Gout. Couldn't go to PCP yesterday because I was at Neurologist all day! Was told I probably have small and large fiber neuropathy. I now have something else that I'm going to learn and work my diet around. Dr. said no red meats,dry beans and tomatoes. I know theres more to it than that. Im thinking my next diagnosis may be a mental breakdown!!!! Im a 37 yr. man that has heart to stay active,outside working,building,fixing things. I may be slowed down but I eventually get it done. Lord help me not get anymore bad diagnosis!!! lol  Guess I needed to vent.

Sorry to hear that...

At least it sounds like your PCP is wanting to try the lifetstyle route first as that can be a big part of the cause of gout.

Not sure if you are already at a healthy weight and have low cholesterol and low blood pressure but that is very important.

It's also making sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. (as advised by your physician) to flush the kidneys of the uric acid.

As well as them telling you to limit your proteins, high fat foods, even mushrooms...

And antiiflammatories are helpful.

There are certainly medications that you can take if for some reason it doesn't go away. But we will pray that you can get rid of this way first!

Obviously I'm not a medical person and you need to follow whatever your Dr. has told you...I just had a good friend who went through this as it's more common in men than women.

I know it's hard when we get something else added to our medical ailments:( But just take things one minute/hour/day at a time...

 Went back to PCP today. She now believes its not Gout but Bone Infection! Got more meds. It's turniing dark red now and swollen. I'm 6'1'' and 196. hoping this will be over soon!

Worthit, please don't let this linger longer if the dr thinks this is infection in the bone. In fact she should have sent you for a Bone Scan, this is how it is diagnosed. My husband spent 3 months in the hospital when he was younger with an infection in the bone of his leg, he was lucky he did not lose his leg. I am not trying to scare you by any means but wanted you aware of the problems that can result from this.

 Thanks Susie! Yeah they made an appt. for a bone scan this coming Tue.and aslo want's to reffer me to an orthopedic Dr. I suppose after the bone scan come thru. I was Rx two different antibiotitcs-Amoxicillin 875mg,Bactrim ds 800-160 and Prednisone 10mg. The swelling went down quit a bit yest./Fri. but the big toe and about 2'' behind it is dark red/prurple. I've never heard of a bone infection in my life so it's only my luck to get it.lol I'm wearing a medical shoe that looks like a sandal that restricts toe movement from Podiatrist( I almost lost this same toe in 05 to self amputation!! I have a small collection of different styles).

welcome, sorry you are having this problem with your toe, hope you get results from the scan soon and get the proper treatment needed.

Thanks Susie and Suzane! The swelling has mostly gone down now but the big toe and area behind is red/purple maybe from bruising? I have read up on this and can be pretty serious but I think I got treated in time. These feet of mine esp. right have given me trouble my whole life. I don't know if surgery will help as the Dr.s make their living doing this. My PCP wants me to see another Orthopedic and will ask his/her opinion on it. If it could help me some I'll probably go thru it.
