Cutting down from 50mg of Oxycodone to 30mg daily.

Hi all I'm new here and need some help please.We live in BC Canada,and our Doctor switched us from 40 mg per day of Oxycontin time release to 50 mg of Oxycodone. These are 10mg fast acting tablets. He would like us to get down to 1 tablet 3 times daily and maintain there.What is the best way to do this?
My wife has Fibromyalgia and IBS plus other chronic pain and I have Diabetes and crushed disc and other pain.I have to run now but will check back later if more info is needed. Thank you.

HI there...welcome to the boards...

If I may ask a few questions as I'm a bit confused...Obviously no one here is a Dr. or medical professional so we just offer thoughts/suggestions to speak to your Dr.

It is very strange that this Dr. has put both you and your wife on the exact same regimine for pain management.

For your wife with Fibro....is she on any other medication that is actually known to help Fibro like Savella, Lyrica or Cymbalta? How about a muscle relaxer? This is very effective for the muscle spasms that occur with this.

And for your issues with the disc herniations....have they mentioned doing surgery to fix the mechanical part to open up the disc space? Have you done and continue to do traction, physical therapy, injections, aqua therapy, and use other medications?

If you also have diabetic neuropathy along with disc issues...many Drs. will prescribe a nerve pain medication as well. This is Lyrica, Neurontin, or Cymbalta....And same thing with a muscle relaxer to help the spasms in the back.

Is there a reason why your Dr. all of a sudden is treating you both the same and now lowering your dosages the same? What explanation did he give you?

He may feel that if you weren't getting very good pain relief at the higher dosages....then he wants to lower your opiate levels and then add in all the other modalities that I have mentioned to help...

There is also massage, acupuncture, steroids as needed for inflammation, and a TENS unit for you...have you done these as well?

No worries about getting back here quickly....we will be here so you can share a bit more about the two of you and the situation...

Seeker, also curious to know as to why your PM would offer both you and your wife with different diagnoses, the same medication and change the doses the same time. Do your guys take any medication for nerve pain, as it is understandable that with Fibro, a nerve pain medication may be introduced along with the Oxy for pain, or is it that they Oxy manages the pain ok?

Sorry I took so long to answer and thank you for the replies.Our doctor had to give us the fast release Oxycodone after our provincial government de-listed Oxycontin and will no longer pay for them.He has ordered more tests as we try to figure out the best options for all the pain.It's just hard adjusting from a time release med that was working well to a fast acting med that doesn't last as long and that's been the problem for us.I will talk to him about some of the suggestions in these replies about taking nerve pain meds along with the Oxycodone as we both have nerve pain,and maybe that will do the trick.Thanks again for the advice,and I will let you know how things progress as we go.You have all been very nice and we both appreciate it.
