Hello,

I'm a new user to these nice forums and I would like to create a thread for all of the Hoosiers dealing with chronic pain.

I've had a massive knee injury from being hit by a semi and along with lots of nerve damage from having relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. I've always taken good care of myself but over the past few years I've really had to address my pain as it was becoming an unrelenting force as I'm sure many of you are familiar with.

I strive for a multi pronged approach to my treatment and part of that has recently led me into the arena of pain management. After seeing a neurogist for the past 5 years, we've all decided for me to choose a pain mangent center but I do not know which one to go to. When I have to choose a new doctor, I would like to keep them for the course of my treatment.

Have any of you centrally located Hoosiers had good experiences with some of the bigger pain management centers like IU Health or are many of you seeing private practices? Luckily I have good insurance and am willing to pay a higher premium for a place that would be smaller and more patient oriented. Ideally I would rather do a one on one with a well respected, independent anesthesiaiogists but there are advantages and disadvantages to eatch type of care.

Hello Morningstar and welcome to the chronic pain forum. From reading your post it sounds like your knee situation is getting worse, sorry to read that.

Yes, nearly everyone here at the forum is under the care of a pain mgt dr. Most primary care physician 's do not want to get involved with rxing pain medications on a long term basis. And now of course we have the DEA involved with their new guidelines for treating CP patient that drs must abide by.

I think its a personal preference on whether you want the big clinic atmosphere or the small office setting. I prefer the smaller office setting.

I do not remember if we have any members in Indiana or not. We are not allowed to give our drs names out here at the forum, however, this information can be exchanged by private email. Your email address can be listed in your profile, only members can see the email addresses.

      Good morning MorningStar!...and welcome to our chronic pain forum!

         It certianly sounds like you have a plan, but choosing the correct one can be a gamble at times. I agree with Straydog and would rather have the smaller setting. At the moment I see a PCD, but am currently looking at switching over to a PM for my care, and really don't know what I will wind up with either.

Hi there...

Just wanted to pop in and say hello. I, also, do not live in Indiana but hope that you can find a good Dr.

Just know that it can sometimes take a few tries. When I was in between my 2nd and 3rd fusion...I met with about 4 different PMs/clinics. Of course I was not accepting or wanting pain medication at these first visits...just wanting to see if it was a match for both of us.

Thankfully I found my now PM who even though he is located in a larger Spine Institute where my Neurosurgeon is...he is the main Dr. In the 6 years that I have gone there...I have always had my appt. with him. I only see the nurses or PAs for a quick BP check or chat beforehand. He also still takes close to 30 minutes with me.

I think it's all about what the DR. has to offer and to me, I wanted one that sees pain management as a multifaceted approach using every possible modality both medicinally and non medicinally.

The only thing that I found a bit puzzling is your other post to Needadvice...in that one you make it sound like you already have a PM and are wanting them to email you as you will give them the name of yours?

Either way...I hope that you stick around as this is a great group of people...we are a "family" of sorts and truly empathize what it's like to live with CP.

SnowBunny - my primary is treating my situation at the moment and my neurologist recommended a pain management specialist. I like my curren doctor but I'm thinking about switching if I think it would benefi my situation.

Hello im a newbee from indiana and have a lot of cronic pain ive had 3 back surgeries and now need a hip replacement and trying to find a good doc around indianapolis in if anyone has any sudgestions please let me know thank you so much

Hello and welcome to HW CP. Sorry you need to be here but glad you found our small corner of the web.

Good luck in your search, I live in SC so I can't help you with your direct question.

I am a cancer patient and have severe CP related to the cancer and its treatments. My current oncologist is also a certified PM, so it's like a match made in heavven for me.

Look forward to hearing more about you, and hope you get a great doctor to help you with your pain long term.
