Hi all just wanted to pass on that Kay and her hubby Chuck, are in need of prayers and positive thoughts.

Kay is still dealing with a lot of pain issues, which makes it harder for her to care for Chuck.

Chuck ISN'T able to take the nexavar to treat his liver cancer. Even at quarter dose he had severe side effects.

They had to give him platelets again, then they took him to get a port put in and then they gave him traditional chemo. He was told that if he didn't take the nexavar he had maybe six months to live. Kay said they told them that traditional chemo isn't normally used in liver cancer but they needed to try something.

Kay is really struggling, she's got so many thoughts and worries. As you know she's been out of work for a long time on WC. She just needs us to be there for her. So, as her good friend I'm asking you keep her and Chuck in your thoughts and prayers. I had the chance to meet her in person, I guess about 6 yrs ago, she a great lady.

Thanks for sharing the update but I'm sad to hear of all the news going on with them...

Do we know what stage he was diangosed as they use such different staging for liver cancer? I remember the last posts were that it was a large tumor and they were doing more tests like a PET scan...so didn't know if they found that it has gone outside the liver? And if so, to where....I know you wrote that the first Dr. said he had lung cancer too! Has that been officially ruled out?...

I'm guessing though that with them prescribing the Nexavar, that the liver isn't unresectable or operable.....

I'm not sure what she means when Chemo isn't used for liver cancer...There is either systemic or by hepatic artery infusion Chemo...

Sorry to ask questions...it's more that we've been following along and I was hoping there might be some good news if it's contained.

I just pray that they are getting the best possible treatment for him..I'm sure it's just heartbreaking for AuntKay and hope that she is taking time to take care of herself as well...Thankfully they do have faith and people surrounding the two of them to help them through this all.

I will continue with the prayers!

Thanks for the update I am sending my prays for auntkay and her
husband. I think maybe they need a home nurse to help with her
husband. It sounds like a lot that Kay has to deal with.

SB - Yes the PET scan was done and in fact Chuck has stage IV liver and lung cancer.

I talked with my oncologist and he confirmed that there isn't much success in treating liver cancer especially at the stage it is. I'm thinking the chemo is more his lungs but they are at stage IV too.

Chuck also has Hep C and cirrhosis of the liver. As you can imagine his case is very complicated. He is being treated at The Cancer Treatment Centers of America. He is getting traditional and non traditional care. All his meals are organic while in the hospital, he's getting some Eastern medical treatments done too.

Kay will do whatever he wants to do. If he decides that he's had enough then she'll accept that. She's been married to him almost 28 years but has known him I think she said 34.

She's facing the possibility of her hubby dying, she's out of work and not sure how she will get by. She's worried about finacial issues, and she mentioned to me that they need to start to think about making some unpleasant plans.

I thank you for keeping her and Chuck in your prayers. Like I said I've met Kay and we spent a whole weekend together along with another couple of lupus patients. I know that Kay, Babs, and I rented a suite at the Sheraton and we had a great time. I think of Kay as a sister to me, and it's so so frustrating that I'm not well enough to go there a just be with them. I'm always ready for a call 24/7 and she knows that.

It's just so unfair, she didn't need this. I'll tell her you are sending prayers.

Barbara, please let Kay know she & her hubby are in my prayers. I am assuming she finally took off of work because of her back, is that correct? I know she continued to work even though she was in a lot pain. It does sound grim for her husband, but you just never know what can happen. I am going to hope for the very best for both of them.

Oh..I'm so sorry to hear that...I missed that particular post and was still hopeful when the Dr. said that liver cancer doesn't spread to the lungs...

I'm glad that she and Chuck are pleased with the Drs. and treatment and that they keep him as comfortable as possible..


I'm sure that their church, family, and friends, will be able to all come through as many do to come and help with meals, cleaning, driving to appts. whatever they need.

We appreciate you sharing this with us even though it's such sad news.

Oh Barbara, please tell Kay that her and Chuck continue to be in my prayers. I know how scared she must be - it's an awful, awful feeling. You may have already answered this question, but does Chuck have lung cancer or metastatic liver cancer in the lungs? My fiance just had a liver transplant in November; his liver cancer was contained and his tumors were shrunk enough using chemoembolization to be listed. I am so sorry that Chuck's options have become so limited, but I think that CTCA is the absolute best at what they do and I am so glad that he is getting his treatment there. My thoughts and prayers are with them......

This is such sad news. Thanks for updating us Barbara. I am keeping them both in my prayers. May God give them the strength to get thru this.

I spoke with Kay today, she sounded really down. I know she wasn't feeling to good but I think she's trying to hide it from Chuck.

She said she would be seeing her Rheumy soon, and she saw his NP last time she was there, they talked about starting her on lyrica.

She told me today that the traditional chemo that they are giving Chuck has only a 20% chance of working. They are in such a tough spot. I know because she told me neither one of them are discussing the potential of Chuck passing away. I think it's just to painful for them and I know she wants to be able to offer Chuck hope, which I certainly understand that.

She wanted me to say thank you to each and everyone of you that are keeping them in your thoughts and prayers.

I will continue to give updates on their situation. Again, thank you for praying for them.

Thanks again for the update. Poor Kay, I can't begin to imagine how she feels, what a horrible situation to be in. I guess al her hope lies in this chemo working. 20% is not high, but you just never know, you have to hope and pray for the best.

As ever I will be thinking and praying for them both

Barbara, thanks so very much for these updates, it's indeed very sad and I sure hope and will say prayers for both Kay and Chuck , mmay things get a little better for them both and prayers that chemo helps...even 20% chance gives one hope...
