That's Crazy!
I have a powerport and they always use heparin to lock it. If they are pushing meds and being unhooked for a short period of time, they use saline. I'm so glad you refused to let the nurse touch it without protection. I know each hospital have different guidelines, but EVERY hospital I've been to at least uses gloves. It's nuts that they would think it's ok not to-especially with the flu situation.
Keep complaining about
the roommate. Most floors will have a list of patients who want to move-kinda like a waiting list. If your dr wants a move, it's much easier. If you are nutrapenic(sp?) it's life threatening to be around sickos. I'm stuck in the house for now due to how low my ANC is. While it's annoying, I'm getting lots of stuff done around the house :) Please keep pushing for a safer setup. It's amazing how clueless some in healthcare can be.
I hope your situation improves. It's bad enough being in the hospital even without compromised care. I hope the medicine is able to give you some relief. Are you able to get any rest? Can never figure out why they allow so little sleep when inpatient. In between meds, blood draws, vitals-patients leave way more tired than when they were admitted. Hopefully the weekend will be quieter.
Take care:)
