Welcome to the forum, debsha.
No big deal. You get a tiny prick from the numbing shot. The injection only feels like pressure. Speak up if you have pain. You can get more numbing medicine.
I don't know why you have a whole separate appointment for this. I've always had them done on the spot when the doc diagnoses inflamed bursa. Maybe he decided it was arthritis.
You may have some numbness right after the shot from the anesthetic and later some pain. The cortisone in the shot takes some time to reduce inflammation, sometimes several days.
I am always sent home with a small ice pack. I keep a good ice bag at home, fill it with my own ice and sit with it, on then off for half an hour or so (see your doc's orders) the rest of the day.
If this treatment doesn't help (ask your doc about the timing) you may need a spinal injection. That works pretty similarly, just numbs the nerve coming from the spine.
If you weren't having this today I would suggest trying some of the pyriformis muscle stretch exercises. Not all hip pain is bursitis, arthritis, or pinched nerve.
