Hi Shell,

I just saw your post. I'm sorry hon that you are facing this. Not being able to urinate or defecate is a huge sign of CES, along with the out of the world pain you described.

Surgery is the only option, I'm afraid to relieve the pressure/compression on the nerves/thecal sac containing the spinal nerves. I am pretty sure that they have already told you that if they have come in to see you.

The good news is that once the pressure/compression is relieved, the odds are good that you will make a full recovery. The danger comes from not relieving the pressure or compression for a couple of days since spinal nerves do not regenerate the way that nerve rootlets do. So damage can be permanent or cause permanent impairment.

I have lived with this twice now, and it is no picnic but you are lucky that your doctors were so diligent in making sure that you were seen again and getting this taken care of right away.

Thank you Sandi! I didnt see this post, sorry! They have dx'd CES on the report but have not told me that yet. They just keep saying they are waiting for the NS because they need the MRI to confirm their suspicions. But of course I cant have an MRI due to my stim. So not sure what they will do if I refuse the removal of the stim. for the MRI.

NS just called back to say they are in the hospital and making rounds, it is just taking forever. The trauma surgeons keep coming in, but they said they are stuck with what they can do as of now. I just want to cry, not ready to give up my SCS, its not like they can just stick it back in after the mri,lol. Sandi, do you know if they can dx/ treat CES without an MRI?

They can do a CT scan Shell, and while it is not as good at soft tissue, it will show them the diameter of the canal and impingement or a myelogram can also be done if necessary.
I can't imagine having to feel like the choice is to give up even temporarily on the stim but they can put it back , the true emergency is for them to relieve the compression on the spinal nerves and quickly.
I have lived with CES since 2006 but it is not an easy life, and I wouldn't want that for you or anyone else. If you need to talk, you can email me and I can send you my phone number Shell.
