BuTrans Patch 10 mcg side effects

Hello everyone, I am new to this site and have just started Butrans 10 mcg. I have been taking two 5 mg Percocet for about 8 months and after meeting my pain management doctor, she switch me to 5mg vicodin with the butrans patch. I just started the patch late afternoon on July 11th, so 3 days ago, and I am getting migraines really bad! The pain for which I am on meds had definitely decreased but now these headaches are unbearable!
How long do these side effects usually last?
Any and all information will be helpful!

Hi Danielle and welcome to HW.

Headaches are a very common side effect of the narcan when mixed with an opiate. That being said it sometimes gets better and for some doesn't. If you try not taking the Vicodin and it stops the h/a thats your answer. If you have to have them you may not be able to continue the Butrans.

Thank you very much nvrthesame! I haven't felt the need for the vicodin but because the headaches I have taken them. So that will be the next thing I try. Thank you very much for your reply!! Greatly appreciated!
Although, do you think it could be the switch from Percocet to vicodin?

It's a possibility as some people get rebound headaches from hydrcodone and not oxycodone. Do you seem to notice it more after taking the Vicodin? Or is it generally there no matter if you take it or not?

I tend to be one that gets rebound headaches with lortab and they closely resemble a sinus headache more then anything.

Yea it is there no matter what. I just woke up with it yesterday and again today. However last night it did go away for a little bit and that was after taking more vicodin. It just boggles my mind because it could be any one of these meds but I can't figure out which one. And I don't want to take the patch off because I do feel it working. I'm jut hoping the headache pass soon.

If you've no medical reason why you can't use aspirin the new Bayer migraine caplets are great and it usually just takes one. They do have some tylenol in them so kind of space them out from the Vicodin.

I take them as a prophylactic to prevent my headache from ever happening. You can try taking it at bedtime if your waking up with them.

If it continues no matter what you do you will have to talk to your Dr.

Vickie....I think you are thinking of Suboxone.....that has both Buprenorphine and Naloxone (brand name, Narcan)....but the Butrans patch only has Buprenorphine in it:)


Because an opiate is extremely dehydrating, (that is why so many people get constipation when taking them), it's really important to drink a decent amount of water (or tea) a day. Obviously barring any other type of medical situation with your kidneys......

I actually drink anywhere from 12-14 glasses a day and literally, if I have a day where I don't have enough...I get a splitting headache! Drs. already say that most people do not get enough fluids as is, and then add in medication we are taking makes it worse! It not only helps not get headaches for me, but helps with fatigue levels as well.

So, for me, I would try this natural approach first before trying to take other medications...even OTC ones yet.

But as mentioned, if you try all the remedies and nothing helps then please contact your Dr....

I knew it only had the bup.but have seen people complain about the headache when they're on another opiate for b/t such as the Vicodin she's on.

From what I've seen folks tend to do better with the Butrans alone and don't seem to have as many side effects.

Your right about the dehydration and that happened alot,getting h/as that week I was off the methadone and solely on the lortab. I almost could know by the headache that I wasn't drinking enough.

I hope she figures it out and can get past the headache since she seems to be getting some relief from the Butrans.

No worries.....I was just trying to help as I didn't want Danielle to think that it was in her patch...Thought you may have written it accidentally as we've joked about the iPad/Kindle before..LOL...
