I'll add to what some of the others have mentioned, and I hope it helps.
I have had Chondromalacia in both knees simultaneously a few times. The ones most prevalent to me were the first time, when I used to play hockey. All those cuts and slides, the sharp, lateral torque, the repetitive nature of the sport, eventually added up. It was so painful, and my doctor's approach was to do the diagnostics and tell me it will eventually go away. The other time, the worst ever, was when I hiked Mt. Washington. Going up wasn't the problem, but almost immediately as we descended I could feel that familiar knee pain. One thing about that particular mountain is that it's ill advised to stop, and you're encouraged to maintain (as the weather can go from a warm 80 degrees, to blizzard conditions with massive snow fall and freezing temperatures, no visibility, and no warning!) I'm sure that exacerbated it this time even more so. Even though this was years later, and I was familiar with the diagnosis, it kicked my butt big time. And, once again, I had the diagnosis, but they did give me crutches, and remind me it'll pass and to not stress my knees. (Not a problem, I couldn't walk).
As Vickie mentioned, with meniscus tears, once gotten, they do tend to be more susceptible and fragile, so maintaining the strength and flexibility all the way around your knee, (not just what PT will focus on,...found this out the hard way because they overly focused on quad strength).
And as Susie mentioned, I also had a Bakers Cyst behind my right knee... I've had ganglion cysts before, but they were on my wrists and are easily removed. They used to just "rupture" them "back in the day!" But if the sack of the cyst is not excised cleanly, and it's just drained or ruptured, the skin of that sack will fill right back up again.
Be gentle with your knees and rehab with caution. If it were me, I would also make sure to stay on top of my strength training and flexibility to protect those joints.
They've come a long way!
Good luck to you.
