The new PM doctor isn't asking for anything particularly out of the ordinary. Especially considering your friend is technically a "new patient" for this "new PM doctor," so he has to start from scratch. I had to have urine tests every 2 weeks for a while before I "proved my salt" so to speak...so this may be a temporary thing this PM doctor does for every new patient.
I know where I live, this State, you can only get a maximum of a one month supply. I would have appointments, and urine tests, every two weeks, until I was well-established. Because I'm on multiple meds for multiple issues, I'm accustomed to having blood drawn on a regular basis too, but it's all to keep me safe and to protect my doctor.
How did your friend manage before with his prescriptions and going to Spain for an entire summer? Did his doctor write prescriptions he could fill for a summer's worth and carry out of the country? Or RXs that he filled while in Spain? Sometimes just showing your plane ticket and itinerary can help both pharmacist and doctor in understanding, believing, and being more flexible in at least considering alternatives.
Has your friend asked his new PM directly and specifically about this situation and asked the PM what he recommends your friend do that would be acceptable? Go to the source first.
Best of luck to you.
