Frankly, hats off to you to even do the whole camping thing. I haven't been able to camp in decades. Plus, I'll admit, as I've gotten older, and as my health has been less than spiffy, the charm of camping has worn off. Many years ago, I would love our big get togethers, family members but mostly tons of friends, some in campers, some in tents, and for 3 days over or around the 4th of July. We'd bring our fur babies along, let them swim in the CT River (back when we lived in western MA obviously), have massive bon fires, cook outside, have a pig roast, it was all the adults, we had a blast and I always loved it and looked forward to it.
Earlier than that, my then-BF at the time, we were very much so athletes, (our FIRST date was climbing Mt. Greylock if that's any clue! Really, FIRST date? We took our motorcycles up and climbed. We were big into mountain climbing (including sleeping on the side of cliffs), rope/rock climbing (obvious correlation), ice hiking, skiing at Tuckerman Ravine where you had to climb up part way to Mt. Washington carrying your skis & gear and ski down. No "lifts." And walk back up....to ski another run. We've climbed to the summit of five of the major Presidential Mountains, Crawford and Pinkham Notch, Wildcat, we played hockey, rode horses, had our motorcycles out, went on 2 weeks riding trips (rode our horses, packed our gear and camped, carrying food and water if necessary for ourselves and our mounts)....and I miss all of that.
Those days are behind me and frankly now if I'm going to travel I was a nice hotel with cushy beds, a shower, TV,.....The idea of sleeping on the ground, even on a cot, makes my back twinge.
You've got gusto!
Sookie
EDIT: Accepting giving up "all those things," I am still determined to get back on my bike. I may hike again but doubt I'll rock climb. But I want to ride my horses again. Step by step.....by step.
