7 months post op hip replacement now have chronic back pain

7 months after New hip replacement I now have chronic pain in my lower back. When I do it I am doubled up trying to stand, and have to wait a while before I try to walk. It is agony in bed I seem to be taking pain killers all day. Sometimes even during the night to get a sleep. Has anyone else been the same .

Welcome to the boards Dorothy...glad to see you found your way to the New Topic button as now more people will see your thread:)

I don't have any experience with hip replacements...the only surgery on my hip I've had was when they took bone to use in my cervical fusion. Many people say how painful that is but I lucked out and only have some nerve pain twinges there or if I bump into it! LOL

There are a few folks on here that have had hip replacements so hopefully they will come along shortly and share their thoughts/suggestions. Obviously no one here is a medical professional so we always suggest talking with your Dr. about anything to make sure that you are on track with your healing.

Is the surgeon still providing the pain killers for you or do you see a Primary or Pain Management specialist?

Hi Dorothy & welcome to the chronic pain forum. I am sorry to read that now you are dealing with severe low back pain. My first thought on this is before you had hip surgery your gait may have been altered, now that you have had surgery once again your gait has changed and something like this can certainly cause back pain. What does your dr say about all of this? Has he tried you on any physical therapy for your back?

I've had both of my hips replaced, and I've also had spinal fusion L/1 through L/5. I can say with absolute certainty that it's a process, and rehab isn't as simple as a few weeks or a few months. While much of the healing with the implant occurs within few weeks to first few months, that's simplifying things.

Our entire gait changes, how we recruit our muscles, how we balance, how we compromise and compensate....and you BET we sure do use our backs differently after a hip replacement. The lumbosacral connection cannot be denied. The SI area can be irritated for quite some time afterwards while you work on your gait training.

In my experience, it's not at all unfamiliar to be feeling pains in the low back, and yep, even 7 months post op. Hip replacements are major surgeries. They take time to heal. Everyone may be different but how the body mechanics come into play is science we're all subject to.

Hi Susie thank you for your comments on my back pain.  I have been referred to physio but the pain was so bad they referred me back to my GP.  I was put on stronger pain killers but they don't even touch the pain.  Nothing seems to be helping.  I am going for a bone scan so maybe it will throw some light on the matter.  It is really making me so depressed,  as sitting, standing or lying down I still have so much pain.  Thank you for your reply.

Dorothy how is the hip pain now, is it mainly all back pain? You know another test they can do is an MRI on your back to see what is going on there. I wonder if this back may have been an underlying thing but the hip was greater at the moment. Whatever, I do hope you can get some answers and get to feeling better....Take care.

Thank you Susie,   I have been referred for a bone scan been on to the hospital and should get word in the next 2 weeks.   So hopefully it might throw some light on what's wrong.  I will keep up to date.

Hello Dorothy and welcome to HW.

Hopefully you will find some of our advice on how we manage our pain issues outside of our meds helpful for you.

I've had a knee replacement as well as spinal problem so I know how dealing with more then one problem is.

If the weekend seems slow hang in here as holidays especially can find the forum quieter.

Just keeping up to date. Pain not getting any easier doctor referring me to hospital for an MRI scan now as well as a bone scan. All this since I had my hip replacement. Don't think the rest of my back liked it. Hopefully one of the scans will come up with an answer.

Still been in a lot of pain,  but getting my MRI scan on Monday 23rd so it has not been too long.   Will let you know how I get on when I get the results .....

Hi Dorothy, so glad to read you will be getting the results of the MRI. Hopefully this will give you & the dr the answers that are needed to get you feeling better. Its tough being in so much pain & not know what is causing the pain.What ever it is lets hope its something easy to manage.
