This actually really upsets me. Yes people die from opioids. Yes it sucks. But the majority of those deaths come from individual decisions to purposefully abuse a medication in a way that has proven to be deadly. The rest of the population should not have to suffer for these fools.

Also, the number of deaths from opioids is far far less each year than the deaths caused by completely "legal", non-prescription substances. Cigarettes, alcohol, heck, even FOOD, just to name a few. If this is a *free country* and people are allowed free will, then so be it. It's not like most of these people even care about the human life element anyway, they just care about the money of it.

In my opinion this med will be such a good thing for those who do really well with short acting hydro...especially those who have been stuck in a rut with dosing due to the restrictions of the short acting pill. In almost every industry, the attitude is "well, if it helps more than it hurts, lets do it!" But almost noone compares the death toll from opioids per year (lets say 15,000) to the lives *saved* (and you guys know what I mean) which is in the millions and millions.

Ugh so disgusted. Sorry for the rant.

That was an interesting read... Especially since the test subjects didn't have much different from the placebo group. And it painted such a negative picture... It says it'll be five to ten times stronger than heroin? What a comparison! Why not compare it to another prescription drug?

One of the main things that bother me about those who oppose and obstruct opioid treatment is that they allow the abuse potential to override the relief potential.

Approximately 40 million American receive opioid scripts for legitimate medical needs each year... and only about 2 million Americans annually use them for "non-medical" reasons... i.e. roughly 5%.

So, to what extent is policy being set for that 5% of abuse vs. the 95% of legitimate use? To what extent is this emphasis on the 5% burdening those with legitimate needs?

Here's my problem with this entire picture! Here in Florida you can get lortab 10 on the street for $3-4 and that's much less then say Ky or VA. Its not a drug of choice here due to the tylenol in it making it a drug they cant run. Cheap alternative for abusers who cant get oxy or hydromorph.

Suboxone, treatment for opiate addiction is not covered anylonger by Florida Medicaid or the top insurance carriers. The Drs that treat addiction therefore charge by cash only at $200 plus a visit and because of scheduling laws must go every 30 days.

Suboxone is $10-$12 a pill or strip of 8mgs at the pharmacy, those are Costco and Walgreens prices, the cheapest in Florida right now. If they can get by on 8mgs a day that's still $300 or more a month for treatment added to the $250 visit at a cost of $550 at the lowest for treatment of opiate addiction. You also have to know that here mandatory labs for suboxone are $175 and that's every month before you get a script, its not included in regular opiate testing hence the expensive test.

Now thats$750 a month for treatment of addiction. That will buy a lot of lortab on the street!! That's the reason for the high numbers in abuse!

I've always felt the answer to this drug war is easier, widespread, reasonable treatment for addiction. Does it not make sense to use part of the billions spent yearly on this war on opiates for treatment of the problem? Would that not in the long run save millions?

Suboxone treatment has a very high rate of success in treating and maintaining control of their addiction. Think about how we feel in the w/d situation? That's the part that the majority of addicts can't get thru. Suboxone takes that entirely out of the equation, all that's left is treating the psychological aspect of their issues and Narcotics Anonymous is free, private, open to anyone and readily available for support of like minds.

Treat these folks and do so with some measure of success insight and our problems as CPers becomes less.

That's my rant for the week! Lol

Makes total sense.

I've also been noticing lately how many movies, tv shows etc feature "oxy" as the drug of choice for the rich, famous and beautiful. And of course none of these characters have legit scripts...

It's literally like advertising for the abuse of these meds. It makes me sick. I watch and think "and THIS is why I'm having such a hard time getting my medication...and why its so "popular" its EVERYWHERE in our culture...and none of these shows and movies portray anything close to the truth...

In reality...almost all CPers take pain meds like they would take blood pressure meds, they don't take them thinking "oh man...I wanna get high..."

People that don't suffer from chronic pain have no understanding of the effect these medicines have on us.I take oxycontin and I don't get a "high" from it.It basically makes me feel normal.I'm able to do normal things like walk out to get the paper in the morning.Blow the leaves off the driveway.

If I over-do these normal things I'm in a world of hurt.But without this medicine I'm basically bed-ridden.

People don't understand.I don't tell anyone that I take oxycontin because they would either think I'm a junkie or they would hound me to give them some.

I feel very lucky that my PMC understands.

What none of them realize is that we've taken it so long that we would most likely kill ourselves by taking enough to get "high " if its even possible?

I just wish I could live life without the stuff and addicts wish they had enough to live life.

Exactly.I remember when I didn't take any medicine and I felt great.Now I think I take 12 pills a day just to feel normal.

Time to eat breakfast so I can take my 5 morning pills.Shakes head.
