Oil prices alone make a huge impact on COLA increases. Gas prices, due to oil prices mostly plummeting all this year, are driving down what we view as "cost of living". Little of COLA calculations have to do with everyday things like food costs, utility costs etc, unfortunately. It's based on a very standard set of govt. calculations, not based on the reality of what we "regular" people buy and need to get by.
In my case, my 1.5% increase will be offset by my new Blue Cross Advantage Plan I just signed up for, so it will be free in a sense. The good news with SS, there is no increase in the Part A or is B part this year. Usually it goes up a little each year, but not in 2014.
