well hello everyone. haven't been on since before my surgery so i thought i'd stop by and say hi.
had my surgery on tuesday and everything went ok i suppose. it was outpatient so i got to go home after awhile. (sure beats being in the hospital)any way had kind of a rough week so far. meds. did little if nothing at all for the pain for which tonight it sees to be alittle more tolerable. also have had what i think is a
spinal headache. not a thing in my arsenal seemed to help.thought about hitting the E.R. and see if
they might be able to take the edge off . still not sure if i want to o or not. maybe tomorrow if it
doesn't get better. one dec.12th is my appt. with my pm to get the medicine for the pump. hope that
goes well. so how is everyone doing these days. hopefully we were able to enjoy our thanksgiving dinner.

Hey Mark.I'm glad you're one step closer to having what I'm guessing is a pretty good pain med delivery system.

What are they putting in the pump?

Mark, if the headache is still there tomorrow I would go to ER. Are you saying the dr that implanted your pump did not put meds in it? Medication was put in my pump at the time of being implanted. If the dr did not put medication in why, what is the reason for waiting?

Keep in mind when they do put meds in it it will be a very low dose & they will do increases to get you where you need to be. Be sure to let the dr know if you do not get relief.

I agree, Susie - I'm really surprised that you don't have meds in your pump??!?

Also, Mark - they do titrate things up..... so please make sure to be vocal and let the doc know about your pain.

I'm sorry you had to have this surgery :( But glad you got it done - and praying that it really is a success and gives you the relief you need!!

You do have oral meds at home, right? To carry you through the transition time?

well today is day number 5 on my headache which i don't normally get headaches so i'm thinking maybe i'll go to the E.R. today. also something i didn't mention earlier but where they put the pump in at feels like i'm being stabbed with a red hot knife. had this pain since the surgery. i've had pain before with my back surgeries but they tapered off after a few days which was told was about the norm but not like this pain. not better of worse, just constant. should there still be pain like this 6 days post.it's between this and the headache, do you think i should go to the E.R.? so far i've been trying to tough it out but this headache has to go. any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

I never had that type of pain after one was put in nor have I ever had the headache. Do yourself a favor & go to ER, they may have to do a blood patch & that will knock that headache out. These headaches can be brutal & it makes no sense to let yourself suffer when there is something that can be done about it.

I want to ^^echo^^.

I've not had a pain pump, but when I had my back surgery, which was very extensive, the neuro warned me in advance of spinal headaches. They are a different animal all together...not to be trifled with.

I agree, and I'd encourage you to go to the ER, perhaps even phone your surgeon (yes, you'll get his service, but this is why they're on call), he needs to be made aware. (I notified my surgeon and the ER was expecting me, so I did not just "show up" and hope for the best).

He can notify the ER and you'll be an expected arrival.

Thanks for the update. I'm sorry about the pain. I agree, you should visit the ER. I hope you did go today as you said.

well i ended up going to the e.r. today. after 6 hours and two shots of dilaudid..........still have my headache. one stubborn that it is.it's still hanging on. they phoned my surgeon who said yea it's probbily a spinal headache and did not do a blood patch. just shy of blowing me off, they said there really wasn't anything more they could do and sent me on my way. they suggested an increase in caffeine and laying down.(which i have been doing) no sure what else i can do. any ideas/ suggestions. thank you in advance. :(

You need to call your surgeon as soon as his office opens up tomorrow and ask if he can meet you in the er for a blood patch, or do a blood patch in office, or referr you out to a better hospital... I cannot believe the ER told you that...That is rude and a spinal headache is horrible to go thru. You can also try calling your PM doctors office tomorrow to get in and get a blood patch scheduled. The ER did one for me and my Pm doctor did a second one a few days later...(on the second one they had to get the blood out of my neck vein) These headaches are aweful and I hope you can get someone to help you as soon as possible...So very sorry your having to go through this agony...keep trying doctor until you can get help....Sure hope your doing better soon...

well finally, headache is gone. YEAAAA!!! not long before i was gonna call my doctor. well i sure wouldn't wish that on anybody. so feeling better in that dept. now i'm waiting for whats next..
interesting that no meds seemed to touch it though. oh well. feeling better and that is whats important..

So very glad your doing better with the headaches, I was worried about you, I had those headaches due to a spinal tap in end of August/September and they are aweful to go through. I had to get two blood patches it was very hard on me. Hopefully, now your pump will be able to get working soon...keep us posted on how it's working out for you.

thank you all for the posts of well wishes. semm to be getting better as the days go along.. i now know why they call it a pain pump. this sucker hurts..it feels like its digging into my skin. most painful sitting down but better when i'm up and moving around. well 7 more days til i get the medicine so thinking thingswill be better. hope everyone is doing fine today. best of health to everyone... turn

Mark glad to hear the headache is gone. Where is your pump implanted? Mine is on the right side above the belt line? I have not had that kind of pain you are describing. You maybe should call the surgeons office & speak with his nurse about this. Do you know if your pump was put in mesh when implanted? My first pump was not put in with mesh, however, when I needed a new one this year the surgeon used mesh, its suppose to help keep them in one place.

yea i agree with ya rick about the headaches and tooth aches. atleast i don't have to worry about toothaches any more. dentures are holding up pretty well. the pump was placed on my left side just
above the belt line. not that it moving around but when i sit down it feels like its pressing against
my skin. i do have a little spare tire (hahaha). it seems to only bother me when i'm sitting down. so i
adjust my sitting/standing accordingly. 7 more days til i get my meds. so hoping things will get alittle
better.

Drink a fair amount of caffeine (or no-doz if you prefer), it's one of the primary and firstline/least intensive treatment ; in-patient they often setup caffeine IV drips for spinal headache patients and tilt the bed up a bit. If you hadn't already noticed, you definitely want to stay as horizontal as possible for the duration. I talk from first-hand experience.
